Smart meters

If smart meters are eventually paid for by the consumer, is that 'Updating the Infrastructure' as an asset?

Do we know yet if the MUA intend to replace the old meters wholesale or just as and when necessary?

It would be helpful to the debate if the MUA were to tell us through a media release.

If they were changed as and when we'd end up with a myriad of differing technologies on the go at the same time.

Well, three actually. Old meters requiring a reading and bill raising, smarts with remote reading and a bill raising and pre-payments not requiring a bill.

Change over would be slow, so 3 systems and meter readers are likely to be required for some considerable time anyway. There will always be some reluctant to change and political pressure not to harangue constituents.

They could do as Manx Gas do and send a card for consumers to send in a reading or estimate usage.

If the MUA really want to save money on meter readers and billing, pre-payment would be the way to go, bills would not be required. Save on the readers and the accounts staff!

It's not that lo0ng ago that payment was by a shilling in the slot meters, my Mother used to keep a supply of washers for when she was hard up or didn't have the shillings. She bought the washers back when the guy came to empty the meter!!! So old fashioned. Or is it?

What I was getting at was the smart meter technology is constantly evolving let alone keeping the old meters in the mix.
