    TT 2022 ??

The deceased riders I referred to were picked up by the helicopter shortly after the incident and were accorded the dignity and respect they deserved.

Have PM'd you with details of the two fatal incidents when the police did not attend until the following day.

    TT 2022 ??

I have not tried to pillory anyone , as an ex H&S enforcing inspector I take the view that accidents are not attributed to just one failure but a series and perhaps it would be useful for all members of the team to have all the facts and the 'teams' answer to prevent a reoccurrence . I marshal and I'm aware that I may not be considered to be part of that team so I'll never know what happened .

Not strictly true Derek, if there was only one rider involved then I'm told there is no need for an immediate visit by the police. If two or more riders were involved then I'm told a possible manslaughter charge could follow which would necessitate a police investigation. There have been 2 fatals (where no other rider was involved) at my marshalling point , a visit was made by a police officer the following day and after confirmation that no other rider was involved drove off . Just saying I made no comment on the official driving the car.

We will not know exactly what occurred and who said what to whom until the full report is published . Neither of the above posts have considered if the riders , at their briefing ,were instructed ,that after a red flag, they would be escorted off the course under waved yellow flags . Riders have previously exited the course anti clockwise (and clockwise) behind a Travelling Marshal on waved yellows without incident . I have to said previously that I was unable to understand why it was necessary for a course car with two police on board to an incident which I understood had been dealt with ( it may be explained in the 'report'). Were red flags still being displayed (if so riders should stop) ? I know one of the marshals at Sulby Bridge and at other posts who have offered facts and opinions but feel it would not be helpful to offer an opinion as I do not have the full facts.

I have it on fairly good authority it was the only one and what the CoC referred to when advising "Ann" that he had dispensed with the CSM's services . As I understand it the allegation in relation to safety measures , which was not specified , came later , perhaps the CoC should be more specific .......... "let the dog see the rabbit"😉

Would I be right in "assuming" you don't marshal? To say that the CSM has his own 'agenda' is a bit strong he had an 'opinion' on this years MGP, That was all. It seems it is now obligatory to adopt/laud the opinions of the CoC/ACU I would like to see the evidence that summarily sacking a respected Mountain CSM will be helpful in the retention and recruitment of marshals on the mountain , I'll grant you it's , at best, an opinion , just not one I share. I would venture to suggest that Mr Taubman was the most 'marshal aware' CoC . To claim that It's being 'stirred up by those who don't have much interest' in TT/MGP is demonstrably false . Hope this helps

Fair point about the number of marshals at the Creg/QB/ Ballacraine/ etc. Marshals , on the mountain , do a bit of marshalling , they have to as at times they are down to minimum numbers (1,2 or 3). You may well be right when you consider that in sectors 9&10 ( the mountain) are never mob handed and the Sector 10 CSM was sacked for voicing reservations about the rescheduling of the MGP ,as now it is a requirement adopt and applaud the views and opinions of the CoC/ACU/DfI. The Sector 10 CSM was well thought of and many may take a similar view that "Silence means you are compliant" and not having similar aspirations to the ACU does not affect the ability to marshal. Many marshals have refused to move to , and left, the mountain as a result of the organisation ensuring that they cannot exit the course until , on occasions until after 11.00 pm .It's no surprise that many already feel undervalued and taken for granted. It's understandable, given the above that a number of marshals feel they have a natural loyalty to their CSM and fellow marshal than to the CoC ACU/DfI. I may be a bit old fashioned but loyalty and respect is ,IMO, earned not demanded. The social media sites would appear to indicate many marshals (Sector 9/10) have decided to 'walk'. Just saying I'm told that the CoC is ex military , if so then it's easier to understand that he may be under the impression that the "Orange Army" can be managed in a similar way to the regular army , perhaps someone should explain that volunteers can go AWOL when they please and without them he will be unemployed .

That's the spirit , I see you left out the bit about the "Germans bombed my allotment and shelled my peas". Motor cyclists wear their "patches" with pride and for the old style "rockers" it's "socks rugs and sausage roll" these days . ETA 'motor' not moor/ more ......... nobody's perfect

Andy, the new entity is that approved by the DfE in consultation with the ACU so it would appear that they are in complete charge . Perhaps Rob Callister could provide greater and better particulars. Sid , the ACU code:- "Any official is required to operate in line with the protocols commensurate with the role and prestige of the event and adhere to the ACU national sporting code with regard to officiating on the mountain course." I have no idea what that sporting code means but assume that all officials have to confirm that the ACU cannot be faulted in any way in their running of road racing on the island , again perhaps Rob could clarify , assuming he can without getting clearance from the CoC/ACU😉. Omobono I have been reliably informed that another CSM has confirmed he will not be marshalling . On social media quite a number of marshals ( on the mountain) have stated they will not be available . the ACU are already in control , they may well ship their own marshals in from across (who presumably will want travelling expenses / free accommodation / payment ??? as do the medics ) to join those local volunteer marshals who are prepared to sign up to total obedience with a non disclosure agreement . We live in interesting times, just saying

I've heard that hypothesis , one could be forgiven for thinking that, given that the existing TTMA is being wound up with perhaps indecent haste. I do not know who has a right to vote at the EGM on 9th Feb ( 7,30 pm)@ Keyll Darree Nobles hospital ( life members or all marshals?) There is a paucity of information in relation to the assets and liabilities of the company , I would have thought that the latest Annual return would have been provided. I wound up a couple of my own companies and had to provide up to date Annual Returns etc etc and wonder if it is an absolute requirement. There is an "assurance" that the directors (not identified) have sworn a "Declaration of Solvency", and it is hinted that if there is anything left after the liquidators fees are paid that will be distributed amongst the members > However , as I understand it if the declaration falls short then in law ,a 'Life Member ' may be obliged to pay a sum towards the winding up costs. It is proposed that Christopher Paul Shimmin of Shimmin Wilson and Co be appointed as liquidator. The only information in relation to the new TTMA confirms that the company and it's members will be ratified by the Department (DfE) and the ACU will 'deliver', and stipulate that all marshals will sign up to the ACU code ( referred to by the CoC in his press statement). Just saying

"Jurby Day" was run by the volunteer members of the local branch of the VMCC. The Government decided to get involved. Unfortunately JB the enthusiasts were not impressed by the opinions of those who clearly didn't understand. I heard a member of Gov say that they would take over 'Jurby Day' and run it properly as they could provide a far better event than that run by a bunch of geriatric bikers.......... That went well !!! The Local VMCC had a meeting recently with Mr Callister about running a similar event around MGP/ Southern 100 . Mr Callister said that there was enough going on and an event should be put on in winter ! 🤣 "There comes a time in every organisation when it's ability to succeed in spite of itself runs out"

Your "suspicions " in relation to the ex CSM are perhaps well founded ( in that marshals volunteer to support the racing ) however I would venture to suggest that those marshals in his and adjoining sectors may be the ones vote with their feet. Who exactly has criticised the organisers 'safety strategy' ? In the past I emailed (a number of times) the TTMA in relation to trackside improvements that could possibly enhance the chances of/ minimise the risk of serious injury in the event of an "off" at a corner where sadly there had been two fatals. I received one acknowledgement of receipt saying 'they' would get back, .... they didn't. The CSM concerned is/was well respected , only time will tell in relation to your 'expectations'. just saying

    TT 2022 ??

In relation to the existing TTMA we are told the date of the EGA to liquidate the company (9th Feb). No information has been provided in relation to the assets and liabilities of the company . No information has been provided about he new TTMA other than it will be controlled by the DfE who will delegate those powers to the ACU. The ACU require marshals to "operate in line with the protocols commensurate with the role and prestige of the event and adhere to the ACU's sporting code with regard to officiating on the TT mountain course " It could be argued that the "orange army" is going to be run on similar lines to the regular army ( obey without question the instructions of the COC appointed by the ACU) . Will marshals be required to sign some form of non disclosure agreement to that effect I wonder ? No confirmation has been given that IOM Gov have agreed to the funding of the new TTMA Just saying ETA No details of the ACU's "sporting code" have been provided .

This would appear to be the TTMA rubber stamping the CoC "sacking" a CSM when he ( CoC) was actually on a "frolic of his own" as when he announced the sacking as he had no authority to do so . Friend of mine opined that if this is the way the TTMA/ COC/ etc treats its volunteer marshals it really doesn't deserve to have any . Just saying

    TT 2022 ??

If the new company, and it's members are ratified by the "Department " then the "Department" has effective control . It would appear that the CoC has demonstrated his parameters of control by sacking a respected CSM because he had the temerity to have an opinion and express it which differed from his own . Just saying

    TT 2022 ??

Fair comment , after over 10 years of marshalling (on the mountain, practice and race days) I'm considering "giving it a swerve" . I agree that some of those in charge would benefit from marshalling on the course ,eg on the scaffolding (without any shelter) at "Casey's Advanced" (bring your own ladder) in the rain mist and cold until , on one occasion after 11.00 pm. The EGM to liquidate TTMA ltd and create a new TTMA ltd states under the heading "What does this mean in practice":- "the new company and it's members will be ratified by the Department to ensure continuity and certainty replacing the previous position where wider membership restricted the company's ability to achieve its objectives and influence the strategic direction with no long-term continuity, direction or leadership guaranteed due to the existing structure and company articles." "The EGM will be held at Keyll Darree Nobles Hospital Strang, Bradden on the 9th February 2022 at 7 pm". I wouldn't miss it for all the world and expect it to exceed my wildest expectations.

Unbelievable , if true, and if the object of the exercise was to encourage even more marshals on the mountain to vote with their feet I have to say that he is doing a fairly good job , has he attended the Eddie Nelson charm school ? Mike Brown is an excellent CSM and is respected by marshals on the mountain and is not ,IMO , obliged by his position obliged to accept, adopt and applaud the views and aspirations of the islands political masters and those they appoint. Gary Thompson should perhaps remember that during the last MGP marshals got so frustrated at being held on the mountain until after the breakdowns/crashed bikes were recovered that many gave the ultimatum that if they did not have a 'copper bottomed' guarantee that this practice would cease they would "step over the tape" leaving their marshalling posts unattended ( It's happened before) . Fortunately the guarantee was given.

Not strictly true, corporate funding has it's place, however what some TT/MGP fans have difficulty with is the Gov concentrating on catering for the corporate/VIP lobby , eg with VIP car rides during racing . I'll admit I have paid for and participated in a few "Parade Laps" on vintage machinery during MGP but given the popularity of "Jurby Day" I would argue ( why wouldn't I ?😂) that many , perhaps older visitors , enjoy seeing the old bikes parading (allbeit by "old wobblers" ) like me .

I think that it is true to say that the majority of opinions on the local FB sites were in favour of repairing/restoring the original scoreboard and taking it down and storing it at the close of the racing season , as was done in the past. I would be interested to see the evidence for your assertion that "the public consultation was fine". I was saddened that you chose to destroy the scoreboard , apart, allegedly, of a bit of it which may be exhibited at the museum in future years , particularly as (I'm told) the museum at Jurby offered to display the entire scoreboard. I have not seen the proposed plans for the new scoreboard but presumably it will only confirm the race information folk can access on their mobile phones . I note that you assured the scouts that they would be involved in the operation of the new scoreboard , perhaps you could confirm that is still the case and provide further details. Frankly , as a long standing road racing enthusiast/marshal I cannot see the expense of an all singing/dancing scoreboard justifiable as those viewing the racing around the course can get the information on a cheap radio . Hope this helps, just saying

It's true that the VMCC were looking at 'doing something ' at either MGP or Southern 100 . ETA. Vintage Mann News (the local branch VMCC mag) reports :- "Members of your committee met up with members of the Department for Enterprise just prior to Christmas to discuss a raft of issues and ideas we thought might be of interest. Yet again we came away feeling very frustrated and frankly disappointed with the governments response". " We were looking at developing a new event to coincide with the Southern 100 ..... Rob insisted July was far too busy and we should focus our attention to developing new events in the autumn and winter months " " I could go on but what's the point" Sorry Rob but after the Scoreboard / public consultation fiasco I'm inclined to believe the people who successfully ran 'Jurby Day' (until the powers that be decided to spear it ) . just saying.
