  1. If he’s not careful HQ will do that. Shortly before he’s slung in the harbour tethered to a brick.
  2. I don't think he’s specifically created it. I think the cabinet office have been more of a driver in it all because it suits their appetite for zero risk / responsibility. But if I was Quayle I wouldn’t want some unhinged spitting screaming lunatic on my front step ranting about how I’m killing people either. That’s what’s driving a lot of policy politically - an understanding that so many peoples heads have turned to gravy over this that they’re limited in what they can do. That’s why I would be concerned that some sort of internment show will have to be put on at some stage. It won’t achieve anything. It will just reign some of the more vocal loonies in.
  3. Agree it is very manageable (if anyone wanted to try) although it seems that even in student circles many are now planning to come home early as they’ve seen a lot of the Facebook posts from the baying mob and they don't want to leave it too late when numbers returning start picking up and get sent to some covid Alcatraz for Christmas when government is forced to put on a show for these morons like it did over the Comis. It’s so sad. These are Manx people who just want to spend time with their families.
  4. No doubt if we had Texas’ death penalty laws we’d be executing people for covid breaches by now and people would be out in the street cheering!
  5. Plus we’ll very likely have community transmission by then anyway. We’ve had 6 months to come up with a more robust policing system that falls well short of internment but we seem to have prioritized resourcing choo choo tracks and the prom works etc instead of more staff knocking on doors and checking up on people. Sadly the default position when every covid-loony in the island kicks off will be - let’s lock all the students up! We’re living in a redneck state worse than Texas.
  6. I’m not sure how anyone of sound mind can think that would be entirely reasonable. It would be a complete over-reaction just as the Comis hotel fiasco was a complete over reaction. There’s so many covid-loonies around though trying to corral government into making increasing over reactions to everything now though you can actually see something similar happening.
  7. No it’s quite an easy concept to grasp https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_liberties Civil liberties are guarantees and freedoms that liberal governments commit not to abridge, either by legislation or judicial interpretation, without due process
  8. Similar things have happened frequently though-out recorded history https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mass_hysteria_cases
  9. It reads odd to be fair MR clearly says they were tested on return which is totally different to the other reports which say they were pre departure tests. Surely they can’t be that stupid to get their interpretation of a written press release handed to them that wrong? As for contact tracing - to be fair both patients could have been on the same minibus to and from Ronaldsway? So if one did test positive on return everyone away was then tracked but only one other threw up a positive?
  10. Bizarre the MR report is totally the other way round to the BBC and other reports. Deliberate?
  11. It’s a technical “non community” though. You assume they’re not ill enough to require hospital treatment so they’ve just gone away for an operation. picked it up, come back, and been tested by the DHSC and found positive when they’re self isolating after return. Dont they test after 7 days?
  12. Returned from the UK where they were away for treatment allegedly. So likely a hospital transfer where they’re now self isolating at home having left hospital. https://www.manxradio.com/news/isle-of-man-news/two-with-covid-19-returned-from-uk-medical-appointments/
  13. People also don’t have the right to destroy many other peoples lives by legally preventing them from working and forcing them to live on benefits (or nothing), or legally shutting their businesses down and effectively bankrupting them. Some people are always going to die in a pandemic. That fact is bloody obvious. It’s also bloody obvious that those who are more likely to die are old and otherwise vulnerable who have a duty to protect themselves from harm as much as any moral duty they might think society has to protect them.
  14. Fat lot of good that is when it’s still 14 days quarantine on return and more importantly when family and friends still can’t visit you here. I don’t give a shit about going away on holiday. However I do give a shit about family and friends in the UK not being able to come over or family not being able to return to the place they were born when a lot of them will be back on furlough for another 4 weeks with bugger all to do. It’s just idiotic to stop people coming here (even if subject to 14 days quarantine) when we can pretty much go anywhere else.
  15. It isn’t really. It’s the Comis Hotel happening all over again though isn’t it? A load of spitting, screaming, hysterical pitchfork wavers bullying government into taking completely unneeded civil liberty stripping action because their they’re irrationally crapping their pants. I would imagine most students will be very sensible as they will just be happy to get back. And as AC days above a lot of them will have probably had it by then anyway.
  16. I’d say that’s largely true. Unless you’re trying to use it’s as some gateway into a pointless rant about students.
  17. I think it’s pretty accurate. If you go on her business website she seems to analyze a lot of poo. https://www.taxagenomics.com/services/species-from-faeces/ And I seem to recall that there is a post way back in one of these threads that suggested the equipment was bought by government to identify the dishers out of dog poo and never used. So maybe our extreme petty mindedness in government spending a huge amount of money just to identify dog shit so they can fine dog owners has some unseen and unpredicted benefits.
  18. Going by your benchmark with 16 now imprisoned for a variety of minor breaches suggests that they’re certainly not getting any!
  19. Could be interesting that though. What if they and the likes of TK & McDonalds etc close as the UK parents close and so can’t supply them with stock etc and the group policy is to observe UK lockdown? Will the IOM staff get any government support? I’d doubt it as it’s the parents decision to stop trading in the IOM but they won’t get UK furlough for the IOM workers either so what happens? It could leave employees of some UK controlled businesses in a pretty tricky position of just being sent home with no pay for 4 weeks?
  20. They need to. At the height there was about 60,000,000 people on state support schemes in the main industrialized countries. Yes SIXTY MILLION pushed out of employment due to covid. For a virus that kills less than 1% of the people it infects. https://www.theguardian.com/money/2020/may/12/how-the-uk-furlough-scheme-compares-with-other-countries
  21. A lot of the comments here, which are merely debating alternative options and solutions, have been interpreted as being critical of government when that isn’t really the intention. Closing the borders was a “no brainer” so nobody is questioning that. It was totally sensible. But it’s where the politics then took us not the science I always question. The biggest issue I have is the instant police state that was created and the network of snitchers and informers that was corralled and actively empowered and the over the top rules put in place like chucking folk in prison no questions asked were all presented as the effective solution when they weren’t really. Again that was resourcing and policing on the cheap rather than establishing any form of robust co-ordinated checking system (we still spunked money on things like the choo choo rails though and geared up the prom fiasco). We also could have had a much more open system that allowed a bit more travel (for instance Manx people to not be barred from returning to their homeland for one which Guernsey and Jersey never did) and some limited business travel options with enforced checking and tests on self isolators being at the core. But that didn’t happen we just had a petty police-state free for all on everyone’s rights and liberties and when testing reared it’s head as a means for more potential flexibility the same state turned on the person proposing more discussion. This has felt more like a population suppression and control mechanism than a science-based strategy to deal with covid for many months now. Any robust strategy should have been science led from day one.
  22. I checked on Cos Registry I’m not sure she does there’s a link to an off island interest if I recall. It was a few weeks ago now. But either way if you can’t make money during the biggest pandemic in 100 years by flogging or facilitating “gold standard” virus tests due to the IOM government as you say it’s no real advert for anyone moving here in the tech or biomed sector that’s for sure!
  23. That’s what really pisses me off as there’s still plenty of money to play with the choo choo’s and order a shitload of new buses and build a new joint services centre at christ knows how much cost. But they’re not seemingly prepared to pay for wider testing and more proactive policing of the self isolation rules which is surely pretty much the most important thing going at this stage.
  24. Costs seem to have been a big issue too agreed. I’m sure that’s maybe half of Glovers issue. Can you imagine being sat in front of your shareholders explaining why the IOM has only bought 16,000 tests when Jersey has tested 150,000 people and the UK can’t keep up with testing demand? If you can’t make good profits selling an essential PCR test at the height of a global pandemic then I’m sure as a business you’d be questioning yourself? I wonder how many “What the fuck is going on we’re not being paid for many tests” conversations were had around all the other things?
