  1. I always use scan and shop because it helps me budget, it's really handy seeing a running total as you go around the shop and then if there is a bit leftover in my budget after essentials I will treat myself to something.
  2. Without immigration, you might as well shut Nobals and pretty much every health care provider on the island.
  3. https://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/okells-brewery-picks-up-prize-at-world-food-innovation-awards-675897
  4. I have been to the Castletown store many times and it always seems busy yes it's more expensive but I think people just use it as a convenience store for bread milk and alcohol.
  5. As I mentioned in my earlier post a lot of people who live in this estate work in Ballasalla or the South. Also for a renter Douglas has become a joke I'd be lucky if £1300 a month would get me more that a damp old two bed terrace in Douglas.
  6. This is the biggest issue with the new development the school in particular is now over subscribed, the head teacher informed me his ideal number of students is 120 they will have 160 by September and now require a mobile classroom.
  7. As someone who lives on the estate, I can say that a lot of people do actually work in Ballasalla and Castletown. The majority of people have moved here because they were commuting from Douglas to South every day. I personally work in Ballasalla and my wife works from home, as for shopping when Tesco has refurbished its southern shops I won't have much need to drive into Douglas.
  8. Each property has two spaces and some have a garage also. Even the 2 bedroom terrace style houses have two allocated spaces, the problem isn't with parking spaces it's with people owning multiple cars and vans, there are several houses in the estate that own four cars and seem to like parking them on the pavement outside their houses.
  9. I live in the new Ballasalla estate and rent my property, a three-bedroom house over 3 floors and the rent is £1300 a month. It's expensive yes but as a renter, I much prefer to rent a newly built property that is well-insulated and energy-efficient. I believe the price to buy the property would be £342.000 so even if I could find the deposit I wouldn't be able to afford the mortgage.
  10. It's all economy of scale Shepherd Neame produce 180,000 brewers barrel's a year Okell's doesn't. It's unrealistic to think a local brewery can compete on price and make any sort of money.
  11. Looking at the poster the 1907 will be canned but I'd imagine due to it's ABV it will cost more than £5.75
  12. I'm now in my 30s and have worked since leaving school at 16, I haven't paid a penny into a workplace pension because I simply can't afford it. I know I'm losing out on my employer's contribution but if I have to work until I'm 71 I will never likely see retirement anyway. I spend my life living paycheck to paycheck like so many others that it's really hard to focus on retirement.
  13. Most small brewery's send samples off to brewlab or other certificated labs for testing.
  14. It's not the membership cost it's the cost of getting the site upto the required hygiene standards to pass the audit. The brew kit and site is 30 years old now and has received very little maintenance over them year's.
  15. The biggest issue Okell's and other local producers face is they need to have SALSA accreditation to get into Tesco. Okell's aren't currently SALSA accredited and it would cost a small fortune to get it upto stand.
  16. Ballasalla Chinese is cash only as well, I'm assuming they don't fancy paying all there taxes.

    Okells

The brewery was built 30 years ago at kewaigue so I'm not sure government money has been wasted. @alpha-acid should be able to tell you more given he designed and overseen the build.
  18. I witnessed a bloke begging in the same doorway last Tuesday, he definitely wasn't Romanian I'd say Asian. He had the full setup cardboard box to sit on etc etc.
  19. I think there will still be some music but surly people want it later in the evening after the rider Interviews etc.
  20. It may be tough for all of the island's breweries right now. H&B will likely feel the impact of losing their music license at the track sides this year. The new brewery in Port Erin seems quite ambitious. However, with five other operational breweries on the island, I doubt if there's space for a sixth.
  21. It's a bomb hoax or at least I hope its a hoax. I have no idea where this image originated but it's circulating amongst the kids on Snapchat.
  22. Yeah I'm not going there for a service, I had to haggle like hell to get the car at the price I was happy with as well but I got there in the end.
  23. Most people I know have a car on finance, me and my wife have one car on finance she uses it for the school run and it's the car we use for family holidays so we wanted something new and reliable. I personally drive a 17 year old astra it's fine but i wouldn't want to take the kids to the UK or France in it, as for being a poseur I'm not sure a family wagon is posing or particularly desirable it's a tool for a job.
  24. I have done some reaserch on them but cant seem to get to the bottom of why it doesn't show on my credit report, I've run the credit report with all the diffrent providers as well.
