You can also combine those things, so your facebook status changes with your twitter status, and it's changeable via sms. The reality is you get a lot of boring shite like 'time for tea' or 'waiting for the bus lolz', but for people who's lives are interesting (ie, not mine!), it can be interesting. I've got mine hooked up with things I already did, so blog posts, rss feeds and stuff just automatically twitter, so I'm not doing anything extra.
