Mezeron & Steam Packet Master Thread

Nice to see SP coming to the rescue of Tesco, SP are now shipping Tescos Goods again as Mezeron cant ship chilled goods

What is your source for that? There are refrigerated containers on Kurkse & Kalana almost every day. They are the white Stobart containers with the fridges on the end!

It was probably the trailer unit seen on the top deck the other evening... (Although I’m only assuming what ThankU saw)

If Tesco have any sense, then they'll continue to throw the Racket the odd unit.

And, if the Racket had any then they would also be playing the 'lets try and win it all back' game.

On another note...

What ever happened to the freebee '6th' voyage tickets from the Racket? It's been a while, but wasn't it something like one you've had 5 trips in a year you got the 6th free... Or have I got that wrong?

1) What are the alleged "slave conditions" on board the Mezeron ships? Surely if the crews were badly treated, the ships would have been arrested by now?

2) The offer prices on the Packet are not kept in check by the User Agreement, and these have been getting racked up quite steeply over the last few years. As silentbob says, there used to be a £99 fare for car + 2, and this would drag out extra custom in the lean periods, thus bringing in extra funds. Now, you are extremely lucky to find an offer of £170 car + 2, and if you look at next year, this has increased again. Talk about a disincentive to travel...... and the feeling that yes, the travelling public are being fleeced.

Quote: "I agree that the company needs to do more to win back the loyalty of the travelling public". Yes, indeed. This is purely down to the company, and not the ship's crews, who are in general very professional and do an extremely good job.

1) If you compare the terms and conditions that are enjoyed by the Steam Packet employees ie. Pay scales on a par with the industry standard for the IOM and UK, High standards of training, paid annual leave, Company pension scheme and paid sick leave. The crews on the frieghters will have non of the above and on top of that they are being paid at rates below the ITF recommended minimum and way below the NMW for the IOM. That is what is meant by slave conditions and poverty pay.

2) Offer prices are allocated on a sliding scale as with the airlines ie. once the cheapest rates are used then they go to the next cheapest rate and so on. The figures and statistics prove that 80% of the passengers who travel do so on aspecial offer.

1) I think you miss the point. If the Mezeron chartered crews are well treated, and happy with what they are getting, that is not slave conditions.

2) Agreed about the sliding scale for offer prices. The point is that the scale is starting at a much higher point than it used to. Fewer real cheap fares are available.

When next years Liverpool sailings drop from 2 a day to 1, there will be half the offer fares available for the same number of people - result, higher fares again.

I think SP Co has been shipping at least one chilled trailer per day for Tesco ( for Graylaw to deliver) ever since this rival shipping line started. They also bring in a lot more for Graylaw/Tesco when the weather is bad, to make sure that there is stock in Tesco to fill the shelves when the little container boat can not deliver!!!

(was it at sea for about 3 days last time the sea got a bit rough?)

Oh and I think the 6th journey free thing ended some time back.

So do I...

And there's been a number of times where there's been very little freight at all. Although I admit, I travel on the day time sailings so can't comment on what might be carried over night.

M&S have remained with the racket, (highlighted by the instance a few weeks back where M&S had zilch for sale, yet Tescos was fully stocked) but that aside, they've always shipped a fair quantity of stuff over. Not forgetting that the post office always use the racket for what I assume is parcels and heavy stuff etc.

As to the apparent increase of freight traffic, this could very well be due to the time of year... i.e. Christmas.

With regards to quoted fuel prices... I haven't bought petrol on Island for over a year now, but there's a good 8 to 10p difference per litre... And that hurts anyone with a car...

:(

I agree Andy730. My understanding is that Graylaw never moved all Tesco traffic from the Packet to Mezeron, and they certainly never did so for Shoprite, as all those prominently displayed apologies from the Steam Packet attested. When the Mezeron ships are cancelled, Graylaw attempt to book onto the Ben using containers on trailers. In fact, last week, a considerable backlog of the empty trailer units that had arrived on the Ben had to be taken back by the Kalana, which then docked at Birkenhead as there are no facilities to handle such trailers at Seaforth container terminal, where the Mezeron ships usually dock. Considering the fact that Mezeron's ships are a quarter the gross tonnage of the Ben, and the fact that they still require pilots whereas the Steam Packet's masters hold exemption certificates, I think Mezeron are doing an excellent job.

I don't care how much a company pays its staff. I just want a cheap and decent service

Lets hope that you are never in a situation were your job is being undercut by poverty wages then, then you wont even be able to afford to pay for the cheap and decent service.

I make every effort to ensure that it is not. But I'm buggered if I would pay extra for trainers made in Belgravia by viscounts, a car that was assembled in Chelsea by Dukes, or toys manufactured in the West End by members of the Privy Council. If I can't tell the difference in the product, I buy the cheapest.

Not that you can find many cars manufactured by British owned companies these days - Morgan is English, Lotus (ah no they are owned by the Malaysians)...

There are a few specialist outfits in the UK - Caterham, Ariel, Noble, that sort of thing (I think!)

and how many of those use british owned components?? i'm thinking the ariel has a honda engine to start with, but the ariel and caterham do have engine options so you could fit an old morris engine if you want??

Chris these people are so taken up with their involvement in the race to the bottom, they're beyond reason. Best thing is to ignore them.

Worrying thing is there's so many of them living here, it doesn't bode well for the future.
