Just noticed it had opened, popped in for a peep. First impressions very good, coffee wasn't bad, good price too, though the sandwiches were quite pricey. Will definitely give it another go..

I'm just a little concerned that the gaps in town are tending to fill with these places, and not the types of shops maybe we should be encouraging to get people back into town. There's only so many cups of coffee to be sold in a day, and I can't see how the business model works, given so many of them.

 

The market will sort it out of course.

 

As for your list of pubs above, well, I wonder, just how many of them will still be there in 5 years time?

Times have changed, shops are finished unless specialist shops. i like a coffee and go to town for one as although i have all the shit to make one at home, its not as nice and not always convenient to say to a mate/work colleague "see you in Jabbawocky in ten min"

 

Bought loads of stuff this week from a sewing machine foot to a lawnmower recoil starter both within half hour and in a few clicks. from experience it would be a fucking nightmare going local for some stuff. Its not always about price.

Which was the last caf/coffee shop to go bust in town? It's the changing nature of things, we're going from socialising in smokey old dives to doing cake n coffee in nice relaxed places. We're eating less in british style pubs and greasy spoons and more in Euro style caffs. We're going out less at night to get pissed but more in the daytime to relax.

 

Shops are pretty fucked by supermarkets and the internet. Can't see that changing apart from items that need some specialist on site sales help, so you'll see highstreets filling up with lifestyle outfits, coffee shops, hair, beauty, shopping, the odd bank and travel agent, experiences rather than places to go grab what you need. High streets are also simply too big, expanded in the period before the internet and now the demand isn't there. They'll have to contract as their market share does.

 

At least coffee shops are providing a focal point in town centres and filling the gaps the shops are leaving and giving us a reason to meet in town.

 

 

 

 

Also: shops are shit. Two trips into HMV this week after an ipad3. First trip, "we just sold out, getting five in tues am, come back then". I came back, those five are ipad2's. "soz". If i'd ordered online Sat, I'd have had it a day by now. Why bother?

I'm just trying to understand it really. Maybe it's a generational thing too...times have a changed indeed recently (12 years). Most of the pubs are usually dying on their arses most weekday evenings here, yet people seem willing to spend pretty much the same for a coffee as they would for a pint.

 

Are coffee shops actually replacing pubs now as the favoured meeting places (even most pubs are offering coffee in the daytime now).

 

I work in town, but it makes far more economic sense to me to have coffee at work (usually good coffee from an expresso machine and capsules) and not pay silly prices a couple of yards up the road. Yet many seem to not mind paying even given some of the costs, even going out of their way to pick one up - not meeting anyone.

I suppose, maybe coffee shops could become the new shops in a sense. You meet your friends to do all your internet shopping, at the coffee shop.

 

If you can order everything on line, people would otherwise be leading lonely lives. I wonder.

Only if you're drinking pints of coffee! Up to £2 is about the going rate for a reasonably sized cup of coffee, which is cheaper than a pint and usually drunk in nicer surroundings to most pubs.

Certainly are for me. I visit a coffee shop or cafe at least twice a week, usually more. I can't remember the last time I was in a pub. Coffee shops just make better meeting places than pubs, you can buy a drink you might actually enjoy and some cake, spend less, go back to work after, don't have to walk through smoking doorway hangers, they usually have wifi and most importantly it's where my mates go. They can be nice places to go and do a bit of reading or work, I wouldn't dream of bringing my kindle into a pub and sit for an hour, but it's nice in a coffee shop.

Probably depends on the quality of coffee at work. I don't often get a carry out from a coffee shop, but I do sometimes as a treat as we've only instant at work. I go to a coffee shop to socialise, not really to buy coffee. They're a pub replacement for me.
