Isle of Man poised to host $550,000 world title eliminators in 2021

 

The Isle of Man, which has hosted several major chess events in recent years, is poised to surpass them all with the announcement of two October 2021 world title eliminators with a combined prize fund of $550,000.

The top 100 men will compete in the $375,000 Grand Swiss, qualifying for the next candidates and a possible challenge to Magnus Carlsen. A parallel top 50 women’s event has a $175,000 prize fund. Their venue will be the Royal Hall of the Villa Marina entertainment complex in Douglas.

Early in December the chess body Fide is expected to affiliate Isle of Man as a new member. Fide’s normal criterion is a seat at the UN, but England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Jersey and Guernsey are already separately represented.

A 2016 Isle of Man win made the name of its then 11-year-old winner.

Last month's Isle of Man championship proceeded normally, a contrast to the rest of the UK where over-the-board play has been halted by the pandemic. Online chess continues to boom, though. To try it for yourself, log on to lichess.org which I recommend as the best site for newcomers.

Magnus Carlsen v Erwin l’Ami, Wijk aan Zee 2011. The black king is in check, so can choose among Kf3, Kh5 and Kh3. Two of these moves draw, but l’Ami fell for Carlsen's trap and chose the loser. Can you do better?
