Lonan3
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4398004.stm It is a shame. He had the potential to be an excellent politician, as well as being an inspiration to those who are disabled, but the various misjudgements regarding his private life made it impossible for him to be taken seriously any more. A few years ago such things wouldn't have caused a ripple because they wouldn't have been reported and you have to wonder whether see-all, tell-all form of journalism really does make things better - especially if he's simply replaced by someone with a 'cleaner' reputation but less ability. The Old Git
Give him his due, he didn't hang around. But only yesterday he was adamant that he wasn't resigning. He had the support of Bliar, which seems to be the kiss of death these days.

A few years ago? Such as in the glory days of integrity in journalism that saw Cecil Parkinson's resignation? I'm glad he's resigned, I fail to see any real significant demonstration of his political abilities, his actions being limited to a contempt of the judicial process and causing minor controversies in a desperate attempt to rival the conservatives in terms of being 'Hard line'. Now if John Reid and Charles Clark could somehow be forced to resign, I might even end up almost liking this government.

VinnieK
All political careers end in failure. Franklin Roosevelt? Why do they bother? Hiuman beings have an infinite capacity for self delusion. What exactly are they deluded about? I'd say that things are probably better in the UK than they were, say, fifty years ago or so, which suggests some kind of successes on the part of politicians. Perhaps taking part in that process of gradual improvement is enough motivation for some.

There has definitely been an improvement in politicians living standards but there are many people in this world who are as badly off as they ever were. Best news all year. He did hang around. He's been on the way out since day one. His policies on a range of things from the police force to immigration were too right wing. What did he resign for though?

Stav. Why would David Blunket release a statement entirely consisting of full-stops? At least he was able to console himself with a night on the town with Rebekah Wade. (Incidently the rumours about what happened between her and Grant Mitchell are very amusing).
