Well, it's been almost a month and we did say it was a trial.

Original thread is here if you want to refresh your memory on what's already been said.

Please remember that this thread is more about dicussing how the past month has been, as opposed to swearing in general. It's important to try and focus on what your perception of the forum has been since it came off. Try and ignore the pre-conceptions you may have. If you were a fierce opponent of it, but now that you've just read this thread and realised you've not really noticed a difference, be honest about it.

I've added the poll to this one, with three options. I hope they're clear. The selection of filtered words in Option 2 is not determined and will be a real pain to get everyone to agree to but I'm not anticipating many votes for that anyway.

I should point out though that we've not had one single report for excessive or inappropriate swearing, nor have we had any emails direct to the webmaster@ address. I was quite explicit in the first thread about the fact we were keen for users to do this. Help us to help you etc.

Anyway, thread is open until 23:59 on Sunday. It will automatically close so no bitching about mods closing threads in the middle of a discussion. :)

Oh, although it's not required, if you'd like to post what you voted and why, it would be very useful.

I voted for no filter. I haven't noticed much of a difference, although I do recognise that some people are using it a little gratuitously. Hopefully once the novelty wears off for them and they realise they're impressing nobody, it will level off.

I think swearing can add colour to a statement, show emotion and express feelings but it should be used responsibly.

I voted limited filter.

Some mild words are OK (IMHO) but if you want this site to expand and become a "portal" type of site then I think you need to moderate the langauge a bit.

I commented in another thread that Stu Peters had mentioned a thread on Manx Radio but had a rider about the swearing in it.

the mods are quite capable of policing any excessive swearing.

We still need your help.

All of us bitch and moan about our inbox getting filled with messages about reported posts, but they help us do the role. There are loads of threads that I personally read the first post in, decide I'm not interested and never check on it again unless I'm prompted to.

Declan actually said this the other day in the mod forum.

Still for all I now they could have been distributing child porn on the Mystery Location Game thread for the last 80 pages, and I wouldn't have a clue.

Of course he means that in jest, but it's a serious point behind it. We don't read everything and we don't see everything. If you really feel that someone has gone over the top with their use of language, then please report it. Those reports are our barometer of what the forum find acceptable.

I voted no filter. I haven't noticed a difference, and don't have a problem with cunt.

Not sure what your sexual preferences have to do with this

I voted limited. I personally do not have a problem with it, but doesn't offending others count for anything nowadays? I am sure that some just swear because they can. What is the point?

Isn't having a limited filter blurring the edges and developing a great expanse of grey.

What constitutes an extreme word?

Presumeably the mods would decide what would be extreme but they'd have to have a discussion every time someone came up with a word they objected to. How convoluted.

We all know what constitutes a swear word regardless of it's offensive value so I'd actually vote for a full swear filter over a ill-defining half-arsed measure.
