  1. The TT is such a massively successful, world famous event that there is no way it needs tax payers' cash to prop up coverage of the event! lol
  2. It would be a massive missed opportunity if they don't build one along the MER. They could link it up with the old Ramsey - Peel railway line too and create a round the island route (well northern half).
  3. The Isle of Man is apparently taking it's fair share of Bre-fugees from the UK according to one local estate agent. http://www.iomtoday.co.im/article.cfm?id=51403&headline=People 'escaping from Brexit' to settle here&sectionIs=NEWS&searchyear=2019
  4. Agreed, Derek. The tram isn't a form of public transport - it's just an extremely expensive museum novelty ride that seems to be used by those who love wearing sepia tinted glasses. The expense of the tickets is only matched by the extreme cost to the taxpayers.
  5. Creating a footpath/cyclepath that is actually attractive and appealing.
  6. There must be a decent scrap value in the track and wires? Even if it's just half of the MER, it should at least be cost neutral to rip out one of the tracks. The cycle/footpath need not cost a great deal. They seem to be doing a decent job on the old Peel rail path - something akin to that would do.
  7. It makes sense to combine the trainspotting and MAMIL fraternities in one place.
  8. This is one of the better ideas that Bill Shimmins has put forward - singling the MER tracks and adding a walking/cycling route. https://www.three.fm/news/isle-of-man-news/mer-lines-to-make-way-for-walk-and-cycle-route/ Cyclists could take their bikes on the trams and then cycle part of the route, while keeping them off the main roads. The steam railway gets by just fine with just one track, so why does the MER need two? The railways lose an incredible amount of money so if they really must be kept then ideas like this should be explored to get more people using them,
  9. The Government seems to be getting in on the art scene. They've created quite a good clone of this work by Banksy down on Douglas Promenade. https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/gallery/2015/aug/20/banksy-dismaland-a-theme-park-unsuitable-for-children-in-pictures
  10. Only from the point of view of wondering whether there will be Liverpool sailings next year... You are entirely correct about all the usual fuck ups along the way however!
  11. As expected the 'new' sound is a disaster! Although to be fair to Mr Peters his show was alright.
  12. I suspect this is purely 'man down the pub' talk, but I heard the Racket may not have use of the Liverpool Landing Stage next year as Peel Ports want to develop it and that's why they haven't released any of their sailings for next summer (except the TT). I know their lease/agreement of the site was up soon, but does it run out at the end of this year or next?
  13. I'll believe you, but others wouldn't.
  14. Sorry to hear you've been pensioned off to the graveyard shift, Stu.
  15. The pepperpot bridge I guess? Failing that the funny weir thing where the river enters the harbour?
  16. As posted earlier, it looks like the river did a proper job back in 1930 too. Some interesting photos on the Mnh iMuseum.
  17. It appears that someone had the foresight to submit an FOI request to MUA requesting the topographical survey completed on Laxey River. Very timely. Although names etc. are redacted this may contain some interesting information: https://iom.icasework.com/servlet/servlets.getImg?ref=486709&bin=Y&auth=0&db=ZVD1ZPdIGvo%3D&access_token=Ikbh3R7BcrE-kOt5lzraNb7UWK29OU2mmlnXWI4HUxNSKIQ-zmwiUH5yd8LfnTw6.xAP3YTQaCnf_rk-XO6c4yg%3D%3D While certain factors will have no doubt worsened the situation at Laxey, I can't help but think there is no real solution to this flood problem. It's essentially taking water from a massive upland drainage basin of a steep valley and forcing it through a man made narrow channel before it reaches the sea. I would be interested in seeing photos or drawings of the Glen Road area before it was developed - I would guess it was probably a flood plain. I feel extremely sorry for anyone caught up in the Laxey flooding but I don't know what can be done to stop it happening again. Certainly proper maintenance of river channels and clearing away all the old weirs and other disused mining/industrial crap from the channel would be a start towards reducing the risk.
  18. Rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic
  19. Not just nest year, but no more trams until the whole job is finished. It seems like the DOI act like children, so maybe they should be treated as such! No tram playtime until you finish your work!
  20. So when will you be putting those skills in to action? Seems a shame to hold them back.
  21. I think the point is that the horses are an added complication to an already convoluted situation. Everything should be kept as simple as possible to they can crack on and get the job done to the best standard, at the best price and in the quickest time... but as it's DOI that will never happen.
  22. Rushen Rear Admiral Watterson has addressed the nation! https://www.manxradio.com/news/isle-of-man-news/juan-watterson-addresses-public-over-traffic-issues-in-south/ It's a shame he can't draft in his friends from the military to get this done quicker... he could even order drone strikes on any cars going against the one-way system.
  23. It's the way the scheme has been arranged. There was a fella posting a few somewhere (may have been IOM Online) a few months back and he seemed to have been involved in a load of tram/train projects in the UK. Basically he was saying it's fucking mental to put the tram tracks in before you've sorted out all of the other utilities and things buried under the ground. He said it would have been simpler and far quicker to do all that first, sort out the road itself, then drive a new track along the Prom.
