  1. You have a lot of experience as a seafarer then i take it ?
  2. Another punter who does not know the dangers of a severe force 9 gale warning, good job the steam packet knows more than you, for everyones safety
  3. As i understand it, they import it at about 5p a unit and sell it to you and me for 16p. At times when the uk is short, they generate our own and export power for a very good return. So you can have a fully staffed power station importing power and no generators running. The staff just monitor the distribution.
  4. If they want to put it there, you will discover the power cable as soon as the 1st liner starts up it bow thrusters as it will wash the top of the cable trench away, such is the output of these thrusters
  5. Nearest tug is probably in Liverpool anyway
  6. You see reports of court cases involving people arrested for being drunk and arrested after fighting or causing trouble, he was drinking in a named pub where he had a huge lot of booze, this comes out in court but no sanction against the pub. More interested in the cash, time to fine the pub for serving him
  7. They say they are very busy with financial crime, you would think that would be the remit of the financial supervision people or what ever they call them selves these days. I know they are very short of people and also lack of money. Its 1 of those jobs where wages are the biggest chunk of the budget, so little room to do much if short of readies
  8. The pontoon in monte carlo is close in plus it is not very tidal, if at all in the med. I have seen a 26000 ton cruise ship on it, no problem
  9. Relativly speaking, its not a big deal to increase the water depth, it just dends how far out you have to go with the dredging
  10. Interesting , but have never come across this type of injection. Not modern practice yet althrough there are dual fuel engines which can use gas or liquid fuel
  11. Its certainly not modern practice, althrough they are building ships with gas tanks and dual fuel diesels. Gives the option to use gas as a fuel in the future, but no mention of mixing gas and heavy fuel. You could inject gas in a similar way to liquid fuel but have to slow down the combustion rate to prevent shock loads .
  12. So you are going to mix propane with the charge air and put this in a very hot cylinder- then inject heavy fuel at over 140 C into this mix. An explosive mixture into a hot unit and inject more fuel. Will be a very big bang i bet and lots of holes in the engine. Think i will keep clear of this mad experiment
  13. What can be blended with Propane ? Not liquid fuel for sure
  14. Modern marine diesels can run on gas or heavy fuel or diesel fuel - the cleaner the fuel, the cleaner the emmissions. Cleanest fuel being gas, but the ship has to be fitted with gas tanks when built. Engine efficiency is dependent on its design and how much of the waste heat you can extract from the exhaust gas to utilise elsewhere and not feed it up the funnel. Hot exhaust is money going up in smoke Modern engines are a world apart from those of 20 years ago, but dont think you can get huge speed out of the boat just by fitting a modern engine- all ships have an economic design speed and the engines are matched to that design. High speed ships as previously mentioned needs lots of power , ie lots of expensive gas oil as fuel.
  15. They have to maintain it sometime, you can't do it all in dock
  16. As this can be spread in the air, how would you isolate them from the rest of the passengers. It would get in the ventilation and distribute it to everyone. The packet were spot on with their action and while it might not be a popular decision it was the correct one - all credit to them
  17. BBC says it's a blown cylinder head so that's not going to get fixed overnight. What little you know mate !! Dont take up marine engineering as a job
  18. They closed the mountain road a few weeks ago to work on the electronic signs, yet as far as i know there are only 1 each end, the douglas one you can park a truck next to and the other one is at the hairpin coming out of ramsey. Seems to be a bit of overkill or am i missing something here.
  19. How would you berth a seacat at birkenhead, the berth has a very high walkway where you tie up to. Not suitable at all Foot passengers embark/ disembark on the vehicle ramp on the Manannan don't they? You cannot run the ropes as the cat is very low and the ropes attach high up on the walkway, they would be near vertical at times
  20. How would you berth a seacat at birkenhead, the berth has a very high walkway where you tie up to. Not suitable at all
  21. 40/50 knots of wind last nignts forcast- a bit breezie to turn around
  22. So you think running 2 boats is cheaper than running one, 2 lots of fuel, 2 lots of docking fees, Seems to me if you get it all on 1 boat it will save a lot ?
