Black Renault 5 Gt Turbo

That's absurd, but then that's insurance companies I guess.

One point worth clarifying perhaps though is that if they think you have the cage it's because you intend racing the car, you could point out that if you are 'racing it' it would be on a closed road circuit such as an airfield, for which your cover would presumably not be valid (normal terms & conditions I think) so it therefore shouldn't affect your premium/chances of getting cover as it is not relevant.

Probably not worth wasting your breath but you never know, and don't forget you can always ask to speak to a manager/underwriter to try and reason with them. Occasionally they do actually use their brains!

hiya glad ur happy with the 5 mate the way i got round the roll cage problem was its a show cage not a race cage so tell them its a show only cage am insured with adrian flux and they had no problem

Thanks for that fella. I was doing a bit of Googling last night and funny enough Adrian Flux is on my list of people to make a phonecall to today :) So they'll accept the difference between a show cage and a roll bar? I thought it was a roll bar and not a roll cage? I'll tell them show cage on the phone anyway :D

Needless to say I am NOT HAPPY about driving into work today in a crappy little 1.0 litre courtesy car - (it's so shite it's more a discourtesy car, to be quite honest, but such is the price you pay for having an eccentric French car with five million computers on it as your main car) - when I've got a Renault 5 GT Turbo sat out the back, but hopefully by the end of the day I'll be fully road legal for it.

I gave the 5 a good look over yesterday and am seriously thinking about getting the bodywork fully sorted to bring it right up to scratch, there's nothing major wrong with it anyway, just a few little bits and bats that that want doing - and after that it'll be a seriously nice little motor. The main thing is that it drives like a dream, the engine in particular runs so sweet you wouldn't believe it was twenty years old, every single thing that appears to be able to go wrong with these thing mechanically or engine wise has been sorted - nice job on that one snakebite :)

Huzzah - good news! (For me at least.)

Adrian Flux - (what a great name, 'Activate the Adrian Flux capacitor Marty!') - came through in fine style, they didn't bat an eyelid at any aspect of the car's spec or my details, and were happy to insure me fully comp with some kind of fancy accident protection scheme thrown in for the princely sum of £278 for a full year's cover.

(As I understand it, if I manage to kill myself horribly in the car, Mrs Ride will at least get some cash out of my needless death, and perhaps a couple of buckets to keep my sloppy dismembered remains in. Moreover, even if I manage to twat the car up in an accident that's entirely my own fault, i.e. 'Pre-mid life crisis crazy dickhead ruins car by smacking into a wall as he forgets he isn't twenty one any more' - then the insurance still pays out to fix the car back up, if there's anything left of it.)

I have a suspicion that if you drive any kind of sports car you might be better off going through somewhere like Adrian Flux, as they deal with underwriters and insurers who specifically deal with this end of the market, so whilst Direct Line (and all of confused.com) just saw 'Souped-up turbo powered twenty year old hot hatch with a racing-esque rollbar in it - ACCESS DENIED!' - Adrian Flux appeared to see 'Married bloke in his thirties with a boring job, probably can't shag the missus properly any more* so needs a car as a dick extension, it's a second car, less than 5000 miles per year, seven years no claims - less than £300 to you guv'nor!'

I would consider my current state of mind to be around an 8/10 on the cheerfulness scale.

*Sometimes I can manage it if I'm not too tired, and if it's before I've had my Horlicks.

Just of interest Ride and without giving too much away what age are you? I fancied the 5 myself but the Mrs told me I could have no more projects

'Thirty-something' :D

I got the R5 down to Raymotors today and gave the interior a good hoovering out and gave the rest of it a proper seeing to with the jetwash, including lots of work with the hot foamy brush thingy, it came up very nicely - both inside and out.

It's down at Q&S (I'd never use anyone else) for a full service next week (although TBH I'm pretty sure it'll get a clean bill of health as snakebite has clearly looked after the engine and mechanicals very well, but it could do with an oil change if nothing else), and from there on in I'll be looking to find someone on the island who can bring the bodywork right up to scratch.

Took it out for a drive to Andreas and Bride and back to Ramsey this morning, it's a scary little bugger, but tremendously good fun - and you feel like you're going a lot faster than you really are 'cause it's such a 'raw' experience. I thought the Mark II Golf GTi I had was a bit of a white knuckle affair, but it had nothing on this car!

Not sure I'll be using it for the daily commute (at least whilst it's still rotten weather in winter) - but I'm already quite fond of it, so I'm taken with the idea of getting it fully sorted out and keeping it for the long term, as the bloke at Q&S said when I told him the make and model of car, "You don't see many of them these days."

eeek!

The foam brush thing is full of nothing but grit, that'll actually scratch the paintwork, if its the one i'm thinking of its just the one foam brush which people use for everything (ie, the wheels, wheel arches, bumpers...., roof...), its a false economy really!, all you see is lots of foam and thing "clean"....when actually its just hiding the mass amount of scratches its putting in, its like sandpaper!

If you have a look in the sunlight you'll probably see a lot of swirl scratch marks on the body work!

Hmmm I didn't notice any such damage, and I did give it a good look over once it'd dried out. It was the lesser of two evils, I didn't dare to put it through the main car wash as it'd probably tear the whole car to pieces, and I'm far too lazy to do it properly with a bucket and a sponge, so the jetwash was sort of the compromise position.

I'll probably be getting it completely resprayed as part of the overall restoration anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

I bought this car today, complete with rollbar and rather nice BMN-5-T plate, and it is indeed a bit of a stunner - snakebite has clearly done a very good job of keeping the mechanicals and the engine in fantastic condition.

The only 'slight problem' I have with it, is that I've been completely unable to get anyone to insure me on it.

confused.com thought about it for a few minutes and then decided it couldn't get me a quote at all, before referring me off to ring up a specialist insurance provider, which I guess translates as 'Prepare to take a shafting.'

The company I already use to insure my other car (a practical family hatchback), who I've been with for years (seven years no claims) and who have insured me on many cars over the years, including some pretty exotic sports cars and Japanese import sports cars, also refused outright to offer me insurance.

The thing they really hate about it is the rollbar modification, when I told the guy on the phone about that he referred it off to the underwriters, who then kept me on hold for about 15 minutes before telling me that they couldn't offer me terms. They even asked me 'Why did you fit the rollbar?' to which I replied, 'I didn't, it was in the car when I bought it.' (I think they suspected I was wanting to race it.)

I went on to suggest that having a rollbar in a 20 year old French car that was largely made out of biscuit tins might not be such a bad idea in the event of a roll, as it could prevent one's head getting squashed. They disagreed with me and said they wouldn't insure me unless I took the rollbar out. (So today's lesson is that the more likely you are to die in the event of a crash, the more favourably you'll be looked on by insurance companies.)

As such, the Renault 5 is officially off the road until I can find some bugger who'll insure me on it, I'll try the local brokers but I'm not expecting too much joy, I fear I'm just going to have to take it up the ass from a specialist insurance company.

Who the hell did you find to insure you on it snakebite?

Try giving these guys a ring:
