Thinking Of Moving Over - Advice Please

To add the news will always make the island look bad as 90% of news in general is negative (the same anywhere), its big news when theres a stabbing or for example the recent arsonist attack, or the herion overdose thread, if it happened everyday it wouldn't have stretched to 7+ pages, people would see it as "normal" and not comment, you don't hardly here about attacks in the UK as the papers would be full.

Fortunately, the real Manx people are rather different.

There's a thought. Who are these 'real' Manx people?

There are some but Sebrof won't know any.

Well I haven't encountered many on this forum, that's for sure. This place is a haven for whingeing, disaffected, zenophobes (not necessarily Manx) who bear little resemblance to normal Manx people. However, I don't want to tar everybody with the same brush. There are some perfectly pleasant people here, too.

But Chiquita certainly shouldn't take this forum and the cringe-making responses to her post as in any way representative of the island.

Are the majority of manx people really that unaccepting of the brits?

Actually we are very accepting of British people. We let lots of them live here.

Funny that. Manx people are British themselves, so if they didn't let British people live here they'd have to move elsewhere.

Correct, if you wish to split hairs, but what is the collective term for non-Manx people from elsewhere in the British Isles excluding the Southern Ireland? Personally, I like the term adjacent isles, but I think that might be a little obscure for the OP. She used the phrase Brits, so for clarity, if not exactitude, I followed suit.

Hi All,

I currently live in Gibraltar and am looking to move somewhere else English speaking with a good education system and low crime rate. I O M is in the shortlist but Im worried about the things I read about the youth culture, heroin addiction and crime rate as I have a child aged 8 and at the moment on Gibraltar we have a good youth culture but the cost of living is high. Any advice would be appreciated

Hi, I very much doubt you`ll have a problem here if you are just a normal everyday person, you can usually only tell that people are from across if they make it blindingly obvious by attitude or comments (some people really do deserve it).I`d love to see some of these people try this attitude out in Ireland,Scotland or Wales and try and get away with it without being beaten senseless, here they are only likely to get some sarky comebacks and some slight shunning.

I wouldn`t make any judgements about the place based on this forum in particular, most of the anti English stuff curiously seems to come from people from England who have just lived here for a while, which the Manx then get the blame for.

I would strongly suggest that you come here for a few weeks and test the place out to see if it suits, if it doesn`t you won`t have wasted much and atleast you won`t be one of those people who come here with seemingly insane expectations, buy a house, get stuck here and then complain about absoloutely everything - like their opion matters far more than everyone elses.

I personally believe the alchohol problems amongst the young are wildly blown out of proportion( or we`d see very clear examples of it everywhere everyday) but they and drug problems certainly do exist ,but not to the extent that they are any worse than anywhere else in the British Isles, probably far better than most places.

There are plenty of outdoor and sports activities, although sadly lacking in entertainment and leisure facilities at the moment( there used to be plenty for such a small place and hopefully will be again with the possibility of the Wave complex and Peel Bay festival coming in the immediate future - if they get the go ahead).

If you don`t like scooters everywhere, you have to consider that this is Motorbike central - this is the Isle of Man - you know TT land.

Anyway come and see for yourself, just don`t have unrealistic expectations and remember this isn`t(nor should it be) little England. If it`s for you and you like it,then you are welcome.

No problem at all, we love the place and the people, far better than any shit hole across or the groups of lazy workshy scroungers there who seem to be on the increase, thats one place I am never going back to.

God if there is one thing I despair more of than this place it's what everyone else seems to think of us. Sure Chiquita, come right over. Dont

worry - we dont hold with darkies, scroungers or poofters either. In fact we hold compulsory public birching sessions for anyone taking the piss with the DSS.

Sorry - just got to pop off now and shoot up.

Absolutely right, old boy. Thank you for the correction.

Even Homer nods.
