After they left the locals built a village on the Viking rubbish tip...the Viking meaning 'ugly people living in a shit tip where foxy women used to live' we now know as Foxdale. Another interesting fact I discovered recently in my research about the Viking boats invading Peel Beach...where they are shown and celebrated arriving in boats on the beach...the reality is that after seeing the Peel women they were in fact actually leaving Peel in a hurry and not landing. There is an old Viking joke on a cross near St John's...'what has 19 legs, 15 eyes and three teeth? ....a Gorgon thingy?...nay...10 Peel maidens!
