Problems At Hospital

wrighty, how much faith do you have in the management of Nobles Hospital? Have you ever come across anyone who has made a complaint that has been 'dealt with' by that management?

I have seen some particularly ignorant responses to people who have dared to complain that have come right from the top of the tree. The typical attitude seems to be "We're government what are you going to do about it?"
They're quite crafty and if you do make a complaint, make sure that everything is wrote down, particularly emailed, as it retains the date and never do a one to one without recording your meeting and be prepared to wait a lengthy time as memory loss is a bonus to them.

You can not record a conversation with someone and use it as evidence, you have to tell them that your recording the conversation first

You are correct and couldn't use the tape in evidence or could you if they ask as to what was said on the recording?

Having said that, if you forgot to tell them that you had it or didn't realise that it was recording, your memory is 100% accurate when going over some of the things you missed or misheard.

Sometimes if you tell someone you're recording you'll get a better response. I did it when I spoke to the Department of Education and having the Dictaphone on the table felt like some kind of defence against being treated like a clueless child. I'd assume it would be similar in that kind of situation? Harder to be rude or overly aggressive if you know the other person will have a record of it. (Though of course they can refuse. As has been said above, still good for a memory aid.)

As evidence in a few civil scenarios may be not, for criminality you definitely can or you can however just simply publish it to show what these people are really like !!!

I went to see an Advocate to pursue Noble's Orthopaedics department for negligence, the Advocate listened to what I and my wife had to say, he then read through my medical records and told me that I had in his opinion 95% of "winning".

My wife and I decided to not pursue Noble's through the courts because they had already shown to us that they close ranks and back each other to the hilt when it comes to hiding the truth and accepting responsibility and we didn't fancy being left with a £400k plus bill based on a gamble which in all honesty in a just world would either never have happened or if it did would have been compensated for without question.

This scenario of mine, is I assume, not isolated and there would be countless others in a similar situation.

Its a real shame you felt you could not pursue what would appear to be a sound case. I know it must be difficult to go it alone. But as you quite rightly point out you are not an isolated case. Maybe its time to form a support / disaffected patient group and pursue a collective action.

I imagine all is quiet as all the issues are being addressed in a candid manner as suggested in the Francis Report across. No doubt an extensive review of the service as a whole is being undertaken as it would be a prudent time with which to do so. The Care Quality Commission can perform mock inspections seemingly which have proved invaluable in assisting other hospitals in maintaining and improving their service, I am sure this is being considered or even undertaken. It would be without question that a close collaborative approach with a specialist centre across is being undertaken in improving the service also. Most probably in the form of extensive training and the establishment of protocols or procedures based around current best practices. No one I'm sure would dare assume the authority to try to railroad in a resumption of service without ensuring everything necessary was indeed in place and certainly not without the expressed approval of the clinicians involved. Certainly lessons will have been learned both from the islands experience and that of those across resulting in a new management style more in tune with ensuring only the best possible care for the islands community in a more efficient and proactive way.

I wonder where the public comments on IoM News have gone? There were 4 - now they ar

e gone?

The readers comments related to other articles are still visible,so it does make you wonder why the 4 comments related to the Bowel surgery article below have been made invisible to

the readers. Bowel surgery suspended pending safety reviewBy Adrian DarbyshirePublished on Thursday 22 November 2012 14:36SCHEDULED bowel surgery at Nobles Hospital has been temporarily suspended

following higher than expected complication rates in patients.Medical director Stephen Upsdell said this type of surgery was often high risk and it was not uncommon for a healthcare organisation to

take such steps as part of good patient safety. He said: The decision to suspend a service is never one that is taken lightly, however safety is always paramount and our overriding consideration. We have temporarily suspended colorectal surgery

whilst we investigate practices and procedures. Our investigations are likely to include an external review.Patients requiring elective colorectal surgery within the next few weeks will be referred

to an NHS Trust in the UK and their surgery will be performed as planned. Only a relatively small number of patients will be affected.Emergency colorectal surgery will continue to be performed on-island at Nobles Hospital.

All appears to have gone exceptionally quiet.....they must have had trouble ordering the industrial sized sweeping brush this time?

Maybe not........Snaefell seems to have got a bit taller lately........?
