Maybe someone has a recollection of this? I cant remember which discipline it was but I do remember a press report of his reinstatement and requirement for refresher training. After the initial surgery the attending doctor/surgeon 'demanded' to know why she was not up and walking about - the nurse informed him that she was in too much pain. One scan later a further 'emergency' operation was required as the scan showed the stiches had burst and her intestinal contents had spilled into her abdomen....potentially fatal, she had to have her abdominal cavity 'washed'. She was told that this was a 'common' problem. If this a 'common' problem - why is it a 'common problem' and if its a common problem why did they leave her in so much pain for so long? Doesnt give me confidence. In fact the way IOM is going, and I am Manx, I will be getting the next boat..there is nothing worth staying here for. cheeky boy Posted November 22, 2012 Share Posted November 22, 2012 Restaurants sometimes fail because the people who open them spend all their effort and money on decor, crockery and fancy kitchens without actually thinking about what kind of food and service the customers may expect I think the hospital may suffer from a similar malaise, the construction was dogged with budget overspends due to the lavish ideas of those in charge and much buggering about trying to fit the latest kit into a space designed for last year's equipment Another bonfire of the vanities Would have made more sense to upgrade the old Nobles and spend the considerable difference on hiring - and keeping - the best consultanst, surgeons etc Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

CBman Posted November 22, 2012 Share Posted November 22, 2012 Fact...my other half what was meant to have a none hassle thyroid operation, in and out with no complications, anything but the case. The surgeon I believe is Egyptian and hasn't got the best record up there. My partner was kicked out prior to blood tests and other checks being done despite her complaining of having pins and needles down her arms. She was given some calcium tablets and sent on her way. Two days later I came home after taking the kids out only to find her in agony, struggling to breathe with her body shutting down. Ambulance, A&E and an extra week in Nobles, turned out they had not given her the vitamin tablets to go with the calcium and because of this she couldn't absorb the calcium. If we had been out for another 10 / 15 mins she would be dead now. The consultant in A&E was amazed by the fuck up, we could have sued but then again there is only one hospital, most of them are great up there but there are one or two who should be sent packing. The Phantom Posted November 23, 2012 Share Posted November 23, 2012 I was in Liverpool last week with my mother as she has been referred over there and was talking to the Bridgewater Travel guys who do all the patient transfers. They do over 300 per week from the IOM - that's a huge amount surely for such a small island with a pretty 'functional' hospital. It seems we are veering towards outsourcing all our patients! Merkin Posted November 23, 2012 Share Posted November 23, 2012 I arrived at Nobles very late one evening with a sports injury that refused to calm down and saw a nurse within minutes and a specialist within 15 mins. The nurse was a Polish gent and the specialist was an Indian. Both had been trained up by the UK NHS to an exceptional standard and knew exactly what they were doing. The midwifery dept is also excellent. My only ever bad experience was when i had to have blood taken and it hurt a bit. Boo hoo. It's a great facility that the island really needed. You only need to get mugged and the shit kicked out of you once (speaking from experience) to realise things are actually pretty idyllic over here. Don't be a prat. Botched surgery is botched surgery whether you're in the IOM or Johannesburg. And botched surgery seems to be what that department are known for. woolley Posted November 23, 2012 Share Posted November 23, 2012 To add a bit of balance. My experience is very positive. I have a close relative, one close friend and two acquaintances who have had serious bowel surgery at Noble's in the past year. All fine and made spectacular recoveries.
