Seriously though, I wouldn't upgrade unless you're due to refresh your OS soon or you want new toys to play with. If you just do general internet and your OS install is fairly new, I'd wait. Wait............................................................for what? Wait for them to fix all the bugs that will inevitably be found, and analyse the reports of how any specialist engineering software will probably cease to work with no guarantee of a version ever being written for the latest OS. There's going to be a catch. Or have they realised that Google's Chrome/Android combo is probably going to make them go bust if they don't do extreme things. Apple started giving away OSX, android, chromeos and the various flavours of linux are all free. Windows 8 was a flop and MS need to get the numbers back up before Win 7 goes end of life. MS are turning into a service company, selling Azure and development tools and platforms. They're been virtually giving the desktop os away for a while now to corporates while selling them Azure time for the back end, this is just a continuation of that move to the cloud. No. It's free for the first 12 months after release for existing windows users. Isaac Posted June 6, 2015 Share Posted June 6, 2015 I signed up for the upgrade but, after reading Ans' post, I'm still hesitant to actually download it when the time comes. What I'd like to know is how do I switch the damn thing off? It's now in my task bar - "Get Windows 10" - and I have to assume it is using up at least some of my memory or ram or whatever. Perhaps it's because you're knob cheese. I didn't have to look that up either. Just sort of figured it out all by myself. Mr Bear Posted June 7, 2015 Share Posted June 7, 2015 Given how much trouble I had getting some legacy engineering software to run on this Win7 installation I think I might be more inclined to go back to XP than forward to 10. I've a feeling that the software I use will probably not be supported on Win10 in the near future. Beyond the engineering software like PCB design CAD and microcontroller programming stuff, I think I could get by comfortably with a decent Chrome or even Android system, and just have a completely separate technical computer that is only connected to the 'net when needed if ever.
