If they can only be recognised from said altitude, why bother doing them? It's not like just painting on the wall of a cave at eye level, is it? The lines were etched into the dry surface and can be seen from the surrounding high ground so no great mystery. First recorded in history around the 16th century(?). The stable climate on the plateau has enabled the longevity but tourism has affected parts of it quite badly in recent times. There's a wealth of rational, scientific info on t'interweb. Forget Von Daniken and all the crackpots, it was all part of the local culture which was technically more advanced than had previously given credit to. Personally I believe it is still a possibility that this planet may have seen visitations and interventions by advanced alien species but nothing like the fantastic and fallacious ideas created by programmes like AA's.
