Anything in common with Peel Road (subcontractors, same types of material/mix etc.)?

It was Island Drainage & Groundworks that did Finch Rd, which by pure coincidence is the same contractor responsible for the section of Peel Rd from QB to Ballakermeen.

They seem to know a lot more about Government Procurement than they do about making roads.

Currently they also seem to be experts on fitting new kitchens in government/commissioners' houses in Castletown. Let's hope they get an expert in to take care of the sink waste pipes.

Dear Minister Skelly

This is not an example of joined up thinking... this is an example of the worst kind of firefighting. One where your officers think they can once again insult the intelligence of the public with management b/s in preference to facing up to the truth and admitting somebody dropped the ball.

Whilst it appears the previous Minister would often succumb to this, I expect more of you.

Some points to consider:

A Minister cannot arbitrarily accelerate the works to win votes. Bless IDGW for trying, but perhaps a wiser contractor wouldn’t have been so amenable to this demand?

The client (DOI) are contractually obliged to manage and be responsible for inspection of the works. At the least common sense would suggest this is preferable whilst the contractor is still on site; not during the first rainfall event – note, not even a significant rainfall event.

The client (DOI) commenced the works without a full design (unusual practice), and then requested the contractor ‘mark time’ whilst the client waited for their drainage consultant to arrive at an appropriate design solution (the reason why this is unusual practice).

I’ll provide an example of joined up working: one where the client, contractor and design team appraise all risk and work together to mitigate – for example having people / sand bags available to hand, in the event that drainage solutions fail is a reasonable fallback solution to the mitigation that all drainage / gully pots etc will have witness tests before handing over the works to the client (BS blah blah… requires this anyway).

To reiterate, the public, least of all, the public with contractual and engineering experience are not dumb, please do not treat them as such.

Nice one Zloty, you should send this to Skelly.thumbsup.gif ...He needs to hear it loud and clear.

ETA: for anyone that can bear listening to bullshit here is Skelly on Manx Radio:

Example of joined up thinking says Minister

Published online at 12/05/2014 17:35:00

The Infrastructure Minister believes his department's handling of current road issues shows a more "joined up" way of thinking.

Laurence Skelly says an investigation is currrently underway to work out what caused the extensive flooding on Peel Road at the weekend, while an major scheme in Port Erin is also being revisited.

Mr Skelly says everyone wants the best quality possible and they are working with private contractors to try and achieve that.

He adds it is better to sort out issues now, rather than weeks down the line.

The thinking on this one certainly wasn't "joined up."

The Port Erin problem was spotted by Gizo on MF over a month ago, but it took teams of experts and a heavy rain shower before they saw their mistake.

Can I have first go at guessing where on the new road surface where its likely to flood in the future where its never flooded before? My guess opposite Marashen crescent entrance by Ballamaddrell.

Furthermore, can I also note that the houses opposite Milner close will probably flood too as they have decided not to put a pavement curb outside these houses.

remember, choose your parents carefully.....

It looks like the DOI are soon to be awarding more work to outside contractors.

Major cuts at DoI as government seeks £5m savings
Published online at 13/05/2014 12:35:00

A package of cutbacks including compulsory job losses is on the cards at the Department of Infrastructure, as it faces a £5 million reduction in its budget.

Minister Laurence Skelly has outlined the scale of savings he must find in the current year - as the department prepares to make a major contribution to re balancing the government's books.

In the past three years more than 100 full-time posts have gone at the DoI.

Staff are being offered further voluntary resignations but Mr Skelly says compulsory redundancies cannot be ruled out.

The department's now considering which taxpayer-funded services could in future be run privately but says no decisions have been made yet.

Mr Skelly says an immense challenge lies ahead:

John Moss was interviewing Teare this morning about a payment of £400,000 with regard to the project. Worth trying to find on listen again as it shows Teare totally unable to provide a straight response to straight question. To be fair to Moss he must have asked Teare the same basic question in 5 or 6 different ways straight after each other and although he never got Teare to actually answer the question it was very evident from Moss's questioning that Teare was being very evasive and refusing to answer the question

An example of ' open government ' I heard this and it just confirmed my feelings that whatever else this present Government may be, they are certainly the most arrogant bunch I remember. There are exceptions but not many of them are members of the ' Council of Ministers ' . The Cabinet Office - have you ever heard of such an arrogant addition to a Government overseeing 85,000 people. I have little time for Bells arrogance but Teare and Robertshaw come very very close. Such self-importance may well destroy this Island, where oh where are the people prepared to stand up to these individuals. Anyone who listened to John Moss interviewing Teare will have seen how fruitless it is to press such arrogance for answers

A stunning effort from the "DOI Sign Erecting Team" at the bottom of Belmont Hill. Obviously someone in the "Cycle Lane Office" didn't consult with the "Road Sign Office" about the possibility of sharing a pole which would make the job quicker, and be cheaper for the island's ratepayers........
