Happy Birthday to The Day Today Yesterday!

I saw a quote yesterday: “It’s 30 years to the day since The Day Today was first broadcast - and producers ever since have taken what was meant to be a satirical warning and treated it as a style manual”.

What a superb show!   Collaterlie Sisters, Peter O’Hanraha-hanrahan, Ted Maul, Suki Bapswent - and, of course, the first TV sighting of Alan Partridge.

Cue Chris:
“Tissue-fingered man too flappy for yacht, says skipper;

Headmaster suspended for using big-faced child as satellite dish;

Portillo’s wife defends crack habit
(Cut to large bearded man saying “it’s cheap. Very cheap.”);

Fist-Headed Man Destroys Church;

Those are the headlines … God, I wish they weren’t…”

From bomb dogs and uzi lovers to Peter losing the news and a declaration of war live on air, to helium politicians, death row special reports, The Bureau and of course Alan, everything about that show was great.

And now, 30 years later, the actual news shows are just like it.

Makes you wonder if satire is even possible any more…

I think Armando Ianucci said the same - the thick of it was stopped because the stuff they were coming up with was not as funny/bizarre as reality.

Did she ever find them?
