Mec Vannin

Since arrving on the Island I have read Mec Vannin's web page as well as numerous articles and press releases (dating back some years) which have all led me to believe Mec Vannin is a distinctly reactionary, right wing organisation.

What a surprise, then to discover they are listed, aong with various and sundry Communist and Socialist organisations as one of many "Leftist Parties " of the world. Leftist Parties Link

I wonder is this some wag having a joke at the expense of the website or whether Mec Vannin are suffering from a bad case of confused identity ?

Mec Vannin aka Mec Vallium are less than useless.

As a political party under the present leadership and membership they occupy a political position that they are doing nothing with yet by their presence are preventing a potentially useful political parity from taking on a Manx national supporting role. They are quite simply a laughing stock.

If Mec Vannin didn’t exist the corrupt COM would quite possible have created such a party in order to divert disaffected people towards in the knowledge that the end result would be NOTHING.

They have a dam fool manifesto, they have ludicrous aims, they achieve zilch, and should step aside and let a REAL Nationalist party emerge, one that was centred on the needs for the Manx and one that was in tune with the 21st. century rather than some idealistic ivory tower totally unachievable and potentially destructive RUBBISH.

Mexc Vannin are a childish joke though one, considering events on the Isle of Man political scene, in rather bad taste.

I've just had a quick look at their website and they don't strike me as being particularly right wing. Being anti-immigration isn't inherently right wing: it just seems that way from English (and perhaps US) politics. Plenty of leftists are anti-immigration too (it is often the poorer native members of a society that are disadvantaged when cheaper imported labour becomes available).

They are pro-renewables which I suppose is politically neutral nowadays.

They oppose the finance sector, which is a pretty lefty policy.

They are for increasing employment regulation and employee rights, including a minimum wage and support the Industrial Common Ownership Movement (likewise).

In fact, the more I read their web page, the more it looks like a wish list for a government spending spree, while at the same time kicking out the principal source of income for the island. I'd say they were pretty far left

Yes, there are quite a few 'Socialists' in the Isle of Man. Some of them are extremely £oaded and pretend to be such as farmers and general business types to keep them from being lonely. Once you knock the veneer off you can discover a particularly nasty brand of capitalism.

Not all of them of course, but some.

From their policy statement, it's fairly hard not to see Mec Vannin as a 'left wing' party. Most of their policies hint, for instance, at the establishment of a planned economy - their stance on immigration, whilst undoubtably being primarily of nationalist appeal, is a manifestation of this notion that's central to socialist ideology.

Indeed their statement on population: "policies to control the size of the population are essential for the achievement of economic, ecological and cultural sustainability" suggests that they endorse the 'lump of labour' fallacy of economics that characterises some proto-socialist thinking (and which most grown ups, left and right wing, haven't believed in since the 1900's).

Of course, they're a nationalist party first and foremost, but that doesn't debar them from being left-wing. Anti-immigration policies and nationalism fit more comfortably in socialist ideology than with free market liberalism (in which protectionist policies and controlled economies are largely anathema).

Don't get me wrong though, they're still lame.

For once, I find myself agreeing with Rog. Mecvannin are not only a political nonentity but are also a hindrance to any possible development of a genuine party to serve the needs of the local population.

They express disdain for the current forms of government without attempting to provide realistic alternatives. As long as they continue to pose, to pout and to preen themselves they are only sustaining a bottleneck to prevent any kind of genuine political development on the island. Their 'drawing room socialism' is antiquated and pathetic.

Claiming they wont stand because of some stance about a clause in the nomination form is much better than standing and losing miserably.

If they thought they could win, they'd stand already.

Why don't we stick two fingers up to them and setup a proper political party that can stand for elections and such and isn't the miss mash of crap that Mec Vannin seems to be? The Manx Forums Revolutionary People's National Liberation Party of Ellan Vannin or TMFRPNLPEV.

Granted the name may need a bit of work but the manifesto can be decided by forum posting a poll voting. It'll be the worlds first proper internet based democratic party. Open to all with a record history of all decisions on these here forums, what an experiment in democracy it could be.

Go TMFRPNLPEV!!!
