  1. Is that 'Nigh' as in nearly? Sums up Ramsey, really.
  2. I also met him yesterday evening - and I'd confirm your impression of him.
  3. Hmmph! The only thing Preston have to look forward to is celebrating 50 years out of the top division in four years time!
  4. It sounds very much as though the 'reporter' was simply taking their word for everything. Sorry, don't believe you! Errrm... exactly what kind of 'medication' are we talking about here? And you have £200 in your pocket, but nowhere to live? The whole thing sounds like a whinge from people who can't be bothered to do anything for themselves (Jesus! I'm beginning to sound like a Daily Rail reader!) but, to be honest, I really believe that this 'problem' is being exaggerated out of all proportion.
  5. As severely pissed posts go dude that's one of the most coherent & sensible I've seen. Mine are normally much worse. I've checked the logs and he actually started to write it at 11.25pm. I think that's probably the first time he's ever been accused of being a 'lightweight'!
  6. The thing that somewhat baffles me is why a self-proclaimed left-winger - who abandoned Britain for New York in a bit of a hissy fit - want a knighthood from the British establishment? Does 'Sir' get you a better table in a restaurant? Quite honestly, when you look at the list of writers who have refused honours in the past - John le Carre, Robert Graves, Aldous Huxley, Evelyn Waugh, JG Ballard, J B Priestley, Anthony Powell, Roald Dahl, Philip Larkin and Alan Bennett are examples - you have to wonder why he was offered the honour and why he accepted it. Regardless of the political implications, I think his 'elevation' reveals him to be a pompous and self-important individual with a much inflated sense of his own talent who was totally undeserving of such distinction. When that is added to the entirely predictable response from other quarters, it appears that the whole thing was ill-considered to the point of being mischievous.
  7. Perhaps it's time for a complete revision of the honours system. Possibly there should be an equivalent of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres to remove entertainment/literature etc into a separate category. Then another category for those who given exceptional service in a particular area, another for those who have worked to publicise or raise funds for charities/good causes over a considerable period and so on.
  8. That is almost certainly the way he'd describe himself. I can't help wondering how many of those who bought the Satanic Verses - out of curiosity - actually read it! IMO, his contribution to literature is greatly exaggerated and there are many others in the field who are more deserving of honours.
  9. I think I prefer THIS ONE - You're Pitiful

  15. I agree wholeheartedly with your comments about the Mail (except that you're probably being too reticent about declaring how bad that rag is!) but, the stories on Iran - and the possibility that a complete nutter such as Bush couold attempt yet another invasion - is naturally of concern to everyone and the possibility is not confined to the far right newspapers. Senior British government sources have told The Times that they fear President Bush will seek to “settle the Iranian question through military means” next year, before the end of his second term if he concludes that diplomacy has failed. “He will not want to leave it unresolved for his successor,” said one. The Times February 23, 2007 …anyone who has been following the US press will know that the prospect of a 'strike' against Iran is now being discussed, and the insane Bush-Cheney axis, fresh from its 'triumph' in Iraq, is, depending on the source, either seriously contemplating such a strike or (in menacing tones) not ruling it out. The motives of Bush and the neo-Cons with regard to Iraq are probably best explained by psychoanalysts; but the only rational explanation for the Cheney approach to Iraq was that it was largely about safeguarding the supply of oil. The Observer February 25, 2007 US Vice-President Dick Cheney has renewed a warning that the use of force could be an option if Iran continues to defy the West over uranium enrichment. Mr Cheney, speaking in Australia, said diplomacy was the preferred course. But in a newspaper interview he backed US Senator John McCain's view that the only thing worse than a military clash would be an Iran with nuclear arms. BBC News 24 February 2007
