  1. This was along lines of my thinking. the "berth upgrades" are actually a smokescreen for the fact that IOMSPC have not been able to negotiate use of the berths. Perhaps Stena need it for their business at the weekends? or have sub-let it to a higher bidder? This sort of justifies the IOMG position to purchase the land at Liverpool, at least we're guaranteed access year round.
  2. Did anyone just hear ceo of iomspc on Manx radio this morning? Wow. Mr Tetchy!
  3. "But the firm has also faced fierce competition from online travel agents and low-cost airlines. In addition, many holidaymakers are putting together their own holidays and not using travel agents." Doesn't take a genius to spot above is primary underlying reason for failure!
  4. just after they complete the 31 weeks of roadworks in the area.... To ensure disruption is maximised.
  5. Almost this. A redesigned deep water port, providing strategic resilience for the Island's lifeline ferry services plus other commercial maritime opportunities, not just cruise.
  6. Have you got "nothing" between your ears?! I'm sorry i have to take issue with that, and that attitude. The island has loads to offer and what it has to offer is not better or worse than Liverpool or Belfast, just different!! Medieval castles Victorian transport network Stunning glens and walks Viking heritage Coastal sports/beach's Motorsport heritage All in a relatively small area and achievable in a day trip, perfect for the cruise passenger. What does a cruise passenger want? To see different places, not just big cities! How does Orkney get 100,000+ visitors p.a. with its tourist offering? Because it has the infrastructure. We need better harbour infrastructure.
  7. here's one for you.... Gib arrest Iranian tanker UK has biggest power cut in a decade Gib release tanker...…...
  8. My thoughts echoed. Must be using the any publicity is good publicity marketing approach, but when this undermines your credibility???
  9. The latest proposals have been dreamt up by a firm of local architects, probably off their own back, without anyone commissioning them. Can't see it would have taken very long to draw those proposals up. To my knowledge (and from their website) they are a well established local firm, with no experience what-so-ever in berth/port design. It's their own admission that the primary goal/driver of this design was to provide more parking space! (and whether that is necessary is debatable) I am quite surprised (as probably were the DoI) at these proposals, as there appears to have been no consideration or consultation with anyone having a marine background as they would have immediately pointed out that berths are supposed to provide shelter/calmer waters - this completely exposed berth doesn't in any way and as drawn is totally unviable. All the proposal is doing is creating more noise about cruise when an expanded port including a deep water berth should be the focus, to ensure the Island has resilience for its lifeline services, and provide opportunities to explore multiple different revenue streams.
  10. Were they discussing the slides that don't fit?
  11. Or read the previous few posts in this thread where same issue is discussed...it was always planned to do this. Just the council objected first time because it didn't look pretty enough...
  12. now if only the herring were caught locally!
  13. Broken link, but holy fuck. Clearly much better to have seaweed rocks and sand strewn all over the newly refurbished prom. It's a sea defence wall but the corpy objected because its not made of diamond (to limit the visual impact) and planners refused because?
  14. apparently not. from the FAQ on myprom.im Are the sea defences being improved? The Department intends to construct a new 500m long sea defence wall, running from the end of the Marina Gardens north, beyond the junction with Broadway and finishing opposite the Empress Hotel on Central Promenade. These works will cost circa £500,000.
  15. to be fair, I think they are putting a sea wall along from the war memorial to around the palace area as part of the works
  16. have to agree, double track totally unnecessary given volume of horse tram traffic. Should have been single track down the sea side of the promenade with 2 or maybe 3 passing places. Would have made road works much simpler and quicker, caused less disruption. A complete nonsense that the walk ways couldn't be shared with the horsetram. They have electrified trams through the centre of Manchester which with much, much higher volume of people and footfall and I can't recall hearing a story about someone whose been hit by one.. I'm sure the vast majority of people could hear/see the slower, noisier horse trams without too many problems.
  17. Contractor: Wait, you never told us cars, buses and lorries would also be driving on the red bits, you told us it was just horse trams. That's a whole different specification of concrete. You need the more expensive blue stuff for that. DoI: Erm…. Taxpayer: Ah, for fucks sake, NOT AGAIN!
  18. Derbyhaven dries out at low tide to the breakwater, so there's not the depth.
  19. A nice flat piece of land with reliable weather data where they can put a big windfarm?
  20. It's a marvellous book, thoroughly recommended!!
  21. About 6.495million specific visits with the sole purpose of visiting the slightly weather worn/vandalised fairy houses. Such sightings/visits can easily be assessed by completely making a number up. Can I have a job at DfE?
  22. Surely, can't do wright for doing wrong!
  23. And whose paying for that court case?! UK legal aid surely would be denied to her? A large NGO? Amnesty?
  24. This. Very important point distinguishing between right to travel (within a Common Travel Area) , and right to establish/work/claim benefits.
