  1. So the owners of the land couldn't move the boats off it?! Wouldn't an easy way to remedy that be to issue the Harbour Board with a massive invoice for ground rent?!
  2. Yes I've looked at the proposal, and realise it's also a property play, but still struggling to see how the figures will possibly work. I fully agree that the Island needs 24/7 non-tidal leisure yacht berthing facilities.
  3. In what possible way does it make financial sense?!!!! Don't get me wrong, I agree with the sentiment and like the idea, but at a cost of £100m it just won't fly. Simply speaking:- maximus stated £350-£500 per meter annual berthing fees and his yacht 19m - so if we make some VERY generous assumptions that the 400 berth marina would be full all the time, average yacht length 20m (I fully admit I have no clue about such things) and say a price of £425/m being the midpoint 400 berths x 20 meters x £425 = £3.4m p.a. Marina operating costs p.a. ?? financing costs? £100m at 5% ---> £5m ?? return for investors? It comes no-where near to passing even this back of a fag packet calculation!!! And of course that income can only arise when the thing is built, how are the construction costs financed in the 2/3 year construction time?? However, I do stand to be corrected and would love to be proved wrong...
  4. The internet says he used to be a director of a company called BIGHEAD Limited.
  5. For a proposed £100m development, the architect's impression doesn't even tie in with the plan! It's a nice idea, but looks like it's totally unfunded at present. Think will file it in the wishful thinking drawer.
  6. How much funding did DUP get for their "supply and confidence" agreement - £1bn additional to NI? Just think what they could do with £39bn!
  7. But what is "free movement"? I would guess it's the right to live and work in different jurisdiction as well as travel there. Does CTA cover that?
  8. If the UK government just state that they will not under any circumstances reinstate a hard border in Ireland, doesn't that leave the EU with the problem? Would the EU force Ireland to erect a hard border? Doubt it. Would lead to effectively a border at the ports and airports on the UK mainland for goods. If UK Government also offers to guarantee free movement of people for Irish citizens? Don't think mainland British people are massively concerned about free movement/right to work in mainland UK of Irish people?? Northern Ireland voted majority remain in EU, so can't UK Government grant free movement of people to EU citizens within Northern Ireland only?? If it means changing the constitutional relationship of Northern Ireland to the mainland UK to secure that arrangement, then put that to vote of NI people. Probably missing some massive point why this can't be done....
  9. why has no-one suggested going to war with Spain as a way to solve Brexit? (just thinking outside the box or alternatively, not really thinking at all)
  10. Went to Dhoon Glen to see these installations. One was pretty impressive and looked like it would have taken some time to create but the other was just a door put in a tree, not much better than some of the stuff kids have put in Summerhill Glen! On one hand I think it has been successful marketing and advertising campaign, on the other, clearly the relatively expensive installations will not last very long being exposed to the elements...(and the general public!)
  11. Eh? Pretty trendy hipsters
  12. you ask a lawyer a question, and you get an answer "depends"? Who would have thunk it?!
  13. If you don't want delivery people entering your house uninvited, shut the bloody door!! People have an implied right of access to the door of your property (postmen, courier, leafleters, politicians canvassing, joeys etc), but to actually enter the boundary of your home without invitation, no. That's trespass in my book. (although my book may not actually reflect the correct legal position!) This should be made clear to the leaflet distributor, by whomever has employed him/her.
  14. Is this possibly the most stupid question EVER to be asked in Keys? OK, it's for written answer, but please, please, please Minister for Home Affairs (Mr Malarky) write "Homeowners are fully within their rights to lock their front doors to protect their homes against unwanted delivery persons" and the follow up question: If a person enters a home without prior knowledge and consent, whether it is acceptable to remove that person; and how this should be done? "If a person enters your home without your prior knowledge and consent then it is acceptable for your to ask them politely to leave. This should be done by asking the question " Please can you get out of my house?" If the person does not leave, then you can punch them in the face, knock them out, then drag them out of your front door. Or tickle them until they give up. Or ask them to play rock, paper, scissors. if you win (best of three), then they have to leave. Otherwise, they can stay and you have to make them a nice cup of tea whilst they burgle you.
  15. A very good plan that requires vision, ambition & commercial acumen...
  16. Perhaps it's a lack of oversight and control. In theory, Cabinet Office has overall responsibility for the departments (I think!). Are there not 2/3 people in Cabinet Office that have insight and control over all of the departments and what they are up to?
  17. The figures will have formed part of Government income under the VAT sharing agreement, until this was broadly revised in 2006 IIRC. Agree with you on the bold part, but see how that washes with HMRC.
  18. I agree with Wooley - let the whole thing lie. My speculation is that the main problem government have is that they cannot reveal the true amount they made out of the film industry (if indeed it is known!) , as there is a real risk that someone asks for it back!! Then the taxpayers would be considerably worse off than a £27m write off, so their thinking is it really is not in the best interests of the Island for the whole matter again to be brought into the spotlight. If they do investigate further, everything possible will be done to obfuscate the true amount of money that came into Government coffers from the film industry, to the extent that another enquiry/report will be a further waste of taxpayer money and risk losing much more than a £27m write off. Despite the public's perception, I believe there are some very capable people in the civil service / treasury that understand above. However, I can also understand that this looks like a democratic/transparency fail, but as it is, Government can't do anything without being instantly criticised by someone, and this is leading to further paralysis, nothing gets done because no-one will make a decision, in case of later fallout.
  19. By "professional mariner" you mean you were qualified as a Master Mariner under section A-II/2 of the STCW Code for masters on ships of 3,000 gross tonnage or more? If so, I'd expect you to know better, as there are many other factors to be taken into consideration other than wind speed - tide, currents, wind direction, forecast, tug availability, visibility, sea state, passenger comfort etc etc. If not, you're not qualified to make a proper judgement about whether a sailing should go ahead or not.
  20. Idiot. Safety at sea is something that should never be taken lightly. Have some respect for the professional mariners whose judgements over passenger comfort and safety ultimately make the call over whether vessel sails or not.
  21. No way?! my fave band all time played here, I never knew!
  22. wait, you came up with that eminently sensible idea, using just your common sense and didn't command a six figure consultancy fee? Well done that sid.!!
