  1. Does anyone know when the original beach was built on? I assume it was before the age of photography, but are there any existing drawings or paintings of the area before construction took place? I can't recall seeing anything like this.
  2. A typo 😂 ETA I've fix it. Not sure how I typo'd it in the first place seeing as how p and g aren't even next to each other on the keyboard. And no, I don't drink and I'm fresh out of herb. Senior moment perhaps. Don't tell Vibes or he'll have me taken out back and shot.
  3. A family member is so fond of chips, cheese, and gravy, that a friend once baked them a very realistic looking cake in the shape of a huge portion of CC&G. The only thing missing was the smell of chips. It tasted lovely too; best chocolate cake I've ever had.
  4. I was joking that you meant the newspapers tasted better years ago. The writing was better years ago too. When I was a kid one of my favourite teachers used to assign newspaper reading as homework, in part because the writing itself, regardless of content, could be relied upon to be good English. Now days a teacher couldn't set the same assignment unless you were showing how NOT to write.
  5. It's not a case of such a person being automatically thrown out though is it. Maybe someone with a bit of compassion in their heart decides on these things, and rightly so.
  6. Thank you for taking the time to answer. That makes sense.
  7. This man is Ukrainian and served in their army in the eastern portion of the country. Perhaps he's here as part of the refugee scheme, at least initially. I don't think they were required to obtain work permits; anyone know? He's very likely suffering from PTSD and possibly physical pain from past war injuries. Ukraine wasn't permitting healthy men to leave the country since February 2022, so he must no longer be able to carry out the duties of a soldier. (Why he may have been here as a refugee) Alternatively, it is possible he's been here longer than the five year work permit stipulation. The war in eastern Ukraine (Donbas) has been going on since 2014. None of it is any excuse for kicking off in co-op, but (self-medicating for PTSD) does add some context. I hope he gets the mental health help and support he needs and continues to do well for himself. It seems he's currently on the right track. https://www.manxradio.com/news/isle-of-man-news/ukrainian-soldier-avoids-prison-after-supermarket-spat/
  8. This may be a stupid question, so apologies in advance if that's the case. They use special cladding on space-going vessels to protect against the high temperatures generated upon reentry to earth's atmosphere. Could they not make a box out of the same materials in which to put an EV battery, thereby safely containing any fire? If the answer is "no" on the basis of cost, wouldn't mass production bring those costs down while saving money incurred by fires?
  9. There's a few missing from the Peel area. I might make a little project out of adding them while out on my daily walk. It is a nice little site; thanks Roger.
  10. If you substitute the word alcohol for drug in the above questions*, those relating to having direct knowledge of people with a problem would all be much closer to 100%. Just sayin'. *particularly questions 1-4, 6, 7, and 10.
  11. I neither have - nor want - dick, bigger or otherwise. No offence, but you'll have to go make yourself useful elsewhere. I'm sure there's call for bigger dick somewhere on the planet.
  12. I know. Doesn't mean I can't wish for it though.
  13. I mentioned earlier in this thread that I'd like to see Co-op extend its Michael Street shop into the small Shoprite/Tesco next door. We don't really need two Tescos in Peel but a bigger Co-op would be nice.
  14. Why does your link redirect to a Rick Astley video? What sorcery is this?!? I'm never gonna give up until I get an answer.
  15. http://autisminmann.org/ is an organisation established and run by parents of autistic children, so they're speaking on behalf of their children, some of whom may be non-verbal.
  16. Well yeah, that was implied in the third paragraph. We'd have to be vigilant to keep it that way in practice. For the avoidance of doubt, I'm pro assisted dying under the terms of this bill, provided the terms are adhered to strictly.
  17. To be fair, according to MR, he has been in contact with the police, although I can imagine he's probably not saying it was his own fault he didn't contact police at the time, or use the emergency exit - ironically directly next to the window he smashed. This guy gives bellends a bad name.
  18. Some can't. Autism is on a spectrum, with some being very high functioning on one end, and some who are non-verbal and unable to live unassisted and unsupervised on the other end. My guess is that these parents are concerned about those on the non-verbal end of the spectrum. I had a cousin on the non-verbal end and I could easily see someone like him falling foul of assisted dying if there weren't strict protocols in place to prevent it being used by cost-cutting minded care home workers, for example. However it seems to me the protocols in this bill would stop things like this happening here. It will have to be carefully managed to keep it that way.
  19. I've lived in Peel for 32 years and there has never been an armed police response to anything like this before. It's the armed response that I find newsworthy more so than some troubled kid screwing up. And before you say it, the QEII bomb threat was a totally different situation and from what I understand, the threat wasn't even made by a Peel resident.

    TT 2023

Thanks, Roger. I'd forgotten about that particular fiasco.
  21. https://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/police-arrest-man-in-peel-following-knife-incident-645478 I'm surprised no one has mentioned this incident yet today. It all kicked off right when people were trying to go home from work. Quite a few armed cops running around the estate for well over an hour yesterday evening. The K9 unit was also in attendance (with a very handsome alsatian). Crazy times.
