Bit late....
appropriate national recognition

?

Maybe the Chief Minister has been reading this thread in Manx Forums...!

"Its such a huge achievement....shouldn't there be some visible public recognition on the Island of this amazing achievement..?" [Ponderer 10 July 2008]

Better late than never I say... Congratulations on your comments Chief Minister.

Lets hope its a suitably bold initiative!

"Yeah - nice one Insomniac. That pesky cyclist has got his wheels balanced firmly on the rim of the bucket. Its about time someone got their claws into him to drag him back inside with the rest of us ....! " thinks miserable Manx Crab

What's crabby about linking to his fall? it was a comedy moment.

Well - its hardly his finest moment on le Tour is it? Still it is quite funny I suppose...

Latest stage is live on ITV4. The last breakaway rider is now likely to be caught - and Team Columbia are apparently taking an interest in the finish of the stage.

Fingers crossed - but there's a 4th category climb in the way so I don't really think this stage suits Cav.

Maybe they are preparing for one of the other Team Columbia riders... C'mon Cav.

A bit harsh having a go at the Guardian when it is the first paper to tip the Isle of Man to win a gold in the team pursuit at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010!

This is what they said after Cav's first stage win...

"....A first stage win for Mark Cavendish and the Isle of Man and there should be much more to come, both from Cav and the island. At 23, the Team Columbia sprinter has several years ahead of him to match Barry Hoban's British record of eight stages, while the island will boast a second cycling Olympian this year, the road racer Jonny Bellis, bronze medal in last year's under-23 Worlds and destined for a professional contract with the CSC team this autumn. In the road endurance academy is another prospect, Peter Kennaugh, all of 19 and a gold medallist in the under-23 track world championships. Bubbling under in the Olympic Development Programme are Mark Christian and Chris Whorrall. With so much burgeoning talent from such a tiny talent pool, the Manx team will be a good outside bet for a gold in the team pursuit at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010. You read it here first."...

Surely there needs to be much more effort to get behind Manx cycling, recognise Cav's achievements and encourage Bellis, Kennaugh, Christian, Whorrall and others...? And that means serious resources and proper recognition. This cycling excellence can really put the island on the map...

That's actually an Observer article, and in fact they were beaten to the scoop by Manx Radio, which the evening before put up an interview with Johnny Bellis, who was saying they had all talked about doing the 2010 Commonwealth events.

Apparently Cav has a 'scouse' accent...

Brit Mark Cavendish pulls out of the Tour de France ahead of the 15th stage.

This shouldn't really be a surprise. I thought he would finish after his second stage win - he has lasted well and his achievement in this year's Tour remains awesome.

A thoughtful interview and reflection on Cav's achievement at Le Tour by Lionel Birnie of Cycling Weekly can be found on the Sunday Times website. Well worth a read.

It would have been nice to have seen a mention of the wider influence of Manx cycling infrastructure alongside the crucial role of the British Cycling academy, but maybe less interesting to Sunday Times readers I suppose.

onwards to Beijing...!
