I scampered upstairs to the hive and burned a DVD-R with 3 Xvid files on it, dropped downstairs and the same menu came up and I was able to select the file I wanted to play.

 

I bought one and was quite pleased to see that it also plays avi files as well in the same manner

Sorry to hellbump this, but I was having problems with jerky playback on a couple of recent XVids that weren't my own rips and I stumbled on this little piece of advice.

Works an absolute treat. If you have any jerky playback issues that the firmware fix didn't resolve, try this.
