Why? Are the seasonal staff members better workers? It's not really an issue unless there is some explanation as to why and exactly what the problem is, unless I am missing something from not reading the Examiner.

Does it matter where they are from? (Or rather, it shouldn't matter)

Oh so they are not better workers than the Manx men? Or are they really monkeys?

Maybe it just comes down to cheap labour?

Anyway, one wonders why the Management would do this. Surely the saving can't be much in comparison to the overall losses? It looks like they're just using the current issue as an excuse to offload the local staff.

They will save on:

* Pension

* NI assuming they are employed through a non-dom company

* Less holiday entitlement

* ...

Anyone else?

Simples. IIRC, only a few staff on Racket Pirate vessels are on permanent contracts with guaranteed increases, etc. Back in the when-i-were-a-lad-and-worked-on-the-boats days (2001/2002), I remember that a few crew members on the Ben were on good £20k+ wages - fully earned due to the fact that they had been there quite long and all of the permanent staff members did a great job and were a pleasure to work with - but the company ended up paying someone 22k to wash dishes.

Seasonal staff, on the other hand, were pretty much treated like throw-away labour. Low pay, long hours, no sick pay, no nothing. Six month contract and you only found out if you got a job for the next six months after that once the personnel officer dropped off the letters on the vessel and then legged it down the pier, so the people who didn't get another contract couldn't knock his lights out (or so he must have thought).

Seasonal workers are great - unless you're a seasonal worker...

Surely in a business in which staffing demands vary such a lot between summer and winter temporary staff make sense? What doesn't make sense is to use temporary staff as the core workforce. Of course you save on pensions, annual leave etc but you lose on experience and the ability to fix problems from accumulated knowledge.

The IOMSP have paid Manx workers off from the Ben and replaced them with labour from S Africa and Hungary, How can they be allowed to do this and expect the IOMG to help them out.

I do not believe you, but if it's true then they are only a few weeks or months away from the very end.

If it's in the paper then it MUST be true :lol:

But on a serious note... where does the Racket stand with regards to work permits?
