Flybe To Cut 500 Jobs

You have to wonder whether they even considered this when making the cuts. How significant is it to them and their bottom line? They are no doubt taking out more costs than this contract is worth to them, but no doubt if they can continue with it via planes based elsewhere it would make sense to do so and keep taking the money.

Having seen the software these companies can use I am sure they know exactly where money is made and lost.

IMO Flybe just wants to get away from the IOM and other bases and I don't blame the management.

Now if only AB & Clown Brown (no relation) had been so proactive when the first VAT cut was made the Island's future wouldn't look so dire.

Even if they decide it is worth mainatining the route due to the contract, it will only be a short term fix and as soon as the contract comes to an end Flybe will probably pull out of the route.

We will never know for certain if the changes would have been made in any event but as soon as Easyjet started creaming off some of the passengers on their minimal service it was always going to result in one of the two ceasing on the route as history has proved we do not have enough numbers to sustain two airlines in competition.

Flybe have no loyalty to the IoM but I reckon Easyjet will have even less, as at least Flybe's business model was more closely alligned to the IoM's requirements

Yes. I know that. The system packages are excellent for drilling down into the figures. Sometimes the management isn't quite so excellent at relating them to the real world. Look at RBS.

I wonder how long RBS will stay in its current structure. The case for breaking it up becomes stronger every month.

"Flybe does not appreciate the significance of the Island's patient transfer service."

Dear Allan,

I think Flybe has a better grip on reality than you do.

XXX

What ridiculous language to use.

Flybe's new Chief Exec understands the significance of the financial health of his company, anything other than that is immaterial. If this contract doesn't fit in with his new vision of the company then it's history, he doesn't give two hoots about old Jessie who has to fly to Liverpool once a month to see her specialist. Let's not try and kid ourselves, the reason we're in the sh*t is because we have followed a policy which has left the island exposed should anything change. Which it inevitably has and was always going to eventually. Our Chief Minister needs to stop blaming everyone else and start looking at his own government for change. His myopia is starting to wear thin.

I'm sure Flybe will axe the hospital run by next March.

Seems so: "Flybe no longer feels the Liverpool route is viable"

http://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/isle-of-man-news/frank-exchange-over-flybe-cuts-1-6261999

From the article:

He said: ‘Flybe no longer feels the Liverpool route is viable. We need to retain an early morning flight out and a late night flight back. Manchester was identified as the only profitable route of its links to the Isle of Man. I’m optimistic the Manchester link will continue in some form.’

No surprise there. As someone who has needed to travel to Liverpool for healthcare on several occasions, I know through experience that Flybe will dump the Liverpool flight in favour of the Manchester flight when there is a problem with crew or a mechanical fault on one of the planes. Many "patient transfer" people have referred to Flybe as FlyMaybe for quite some time. It's now becoming all too true.

edited to add... Flybe has never given two hoots about hospital transfer patients - why would they start now?

It also used to be the other way around, However I find it interesting that about 2,000 more a month to Manchester with Flybe than to Liverpool and it is profitable whereby the Liverpool route makes a loss. 2,000 or so less also use Easyjet to Livepool each month which basically seems to show that by allowing Easyjet to cream off a percentage of the figures it has caused Flybe to pull out. Eastjet I expect make a profit on the route as they presently I think only do 8 round trips a week against Flybe's 25.

I Easyjet will probably up thie frequency once Flybe go, but it will probaly be at best twice a day so a much reduced service

That is a massive assumption to be making.

easyJet are even less interested in the IOM than Flybe. They only come here when they have nothing better to do with their aircraft. Have you seen the easyJet schedules to Gatwick for next summer? They aren't going to fly here at all on a Saturday, in the peak season, because they have opportunities to deploy assets more profitably, where as this year there were nearly 400 seats in each direction on those dates. It is nothing to do with demand to or from IOM, or supporting the IOM economy, it is all about deploying their resources to make the maximum profit. They will be off the routes altogether, at the drop of a hat, if something better comes along.

That is a bit disingenuous and factually incorrect. In the six years I've been flying the route for Flybe I have never known a flight 'dumped' as you decribe it. If an aircraft goes tech, or there is crew sickness, initially its a case of 'fly the plan'' and any delay taken on the service that that aircraft and crew are scheduled for. If problems persist, flights may be consolidated later in the day to ensure the largest number of people can get where they want to be with the assets available. The flights crews and support staff at the airport realise the importace of the health service flights to our community. I have personally delayed flights to allow patients who are running late to get across or back home.

Of course it isn't. The only routes that are viable are the ones the EJ aren't all over like a rash (Manchester). The problem with getting any more carriers on routes is squarely EJs ability to eat into the profitability on that route by pitching bigger planes and cheaper fares. Even BA have little hope on LCY when most leisure travellers can go to LGW for £60 on EJ leaving limited business demand on LCY.

Letting EJ in early before Flybe pulled out was madness, and has guaranteed that nothing but the scraps is left over for anyone else. So its killed everything stone dead.

Quite what Bell expected from talks was anyones guess. IOMG fucked up, by letting EJ in and commercial decisions have been made on the back of that.

It will be £50 an hour in the carpark soon to cover yet more airport losses!

On todays MMTV interview with Paul, the CM said that the Patient Transfer Contract was worth IIRC about 1.7million a year to Flybe.

I am not an accountant but I would guess that this, quite small sum of money, in the overall scheme of things, will not be enough to keep them employing 50 staff here.
