illegitimi non carborundum
I am hoping to come back to the Island for the 'summer' and will be staying at my house in Onchan. Could some good souls tell me what broadband speeds I can expect to get as the service providers tend to be extremely optimistic with their claims. Many thanks. http://www.speedtest.net/
ans
http://www.wimanx.com/support/linetest/ Just put in the phone number of the house. It's a live test into the system so should be pretty accurate and consistent across the providers as they all use the same external plant.

x-in-man
4.22 on the damp download string, 0.22 on the damp upload string - and I pay for this shit.
dilligaf
Er... 2.61 up and 0.61 down and we pay too. Shit isn't it ? Just tried Ans's test and it says we should get 12-14 mbps !
wrighty
11.5 Download, about 0.5 upload. My son was simultaneously playing some online game while talking over Skype as I did the test. Will that mean my actual figures are better? Even so, 11.5 seems fast enough.
Burt
Tested over wireless, Marown
trmpton
Whilst interesting enough, none of these figures mean anything unless its a wired test, with the router straight into the master socket, and with no other users on the circuit. I guess most are actually wireless via a router plugged into an extension which is actually being used by other people while the test is run and so are in fact completely meaningless. Burt
Very true trmpton, just done that as a comparison, what a difference..
trmpton
Very true trmpton, just done that as a comparison, what a difference.. And still depends on about a million other variables but shows a big difference. This isn't aimed at Burt in any way, or really related to the OP, but the people who complain about their slow "internet" speeds, are generally the people who have no idea what they are testing what impacts on it or the very basic things they could do to improve it. ans
Just tried Ans's test and it says we should get 12-14 mbps ! As trmpton points out, that is a theoretical test. You wont get the same result from your tablet on the wifi while you're streaming porn on the TV. Try a wired connection direct to the router with nothing else plugged in. If you get that 12-14mb then either your router is shit (if wifi) or you have bad internal cabling (if LAN)

This PC is wired to the router, but ATM there are two other people using their mobiles, one ipad and a laptop all on wi-fi. So maybe I shouldn't expect too much.
