What else are you supposed to put your shopping in? Not everybody is a trainspotter with a compass, magnifying glass and spare bag for life in their pocket.

Not practical though. Not whilst production is typically no longer local and all of the different brands and varieties use different styles of bottles. Imagine the huge costs involved in separating and transporting all the different styles and brands of bottle for re use.

Local collection for recycling is a good compromise. Most of Europe does exactly the same. Glass is typically disposed of for recycling or alternative use.
