Howard
17 hours ago, John Wright said: My place in Bulgaria is very near Melnik, south west Bulgaria. Really good reds. £3, 5 or 7 a bottle. There are great wines on the Black Sea Coast, on the Danube, around Ruse, and in the Thracian region, especially Starosel. In Spain, I’m in the Penedes wine region. And next to Priorat and Conca de Barbers. Also Cava country. Penedes reds are better than Rioja, and beat most burgundies. Good Cava is better than most champagne. Every village or town has a wine cooperative cellar. You can pick up excellent reds, whites or fizz grown less than a mile away, often organically. Never more than £10, and that’s real quality. £4 will get good generic local stuff. Couple places nearby sell al meyor, wholesale. You take empty bottles, or a gallon container, down, and they fill, red, white, cava, or, the latest, artisan vermut. £2 a bottle for cava to use in spritzers. Awesome information, thank you. Actually, I'm drinking a bottle of it right now with my lunch.
Howard
I've also seen there are some really lovely tourism places around the Black Sea coast. There's one I was looking at not long ago which is part of Russia. I forget the name of it but it looks a lot more Mediterranean than I had thought. With a name like Black Sea, I always assumed it was dark and miserable, a bit like Blackpool.

No Gulf Stream, short season, late May to mid September. up to 40° in July & August, blocks of ice floating in the sea in January to March. Some of the Crimean resorts are supposed to be spectacular. Varna in Bulgaria has a casino and promenade to match Monaco. Sunny Beach is like Benidorm, full of 18-30, Saga, and russian, uktainian and Brits drinking themselves silly in the sun on £1 a litre beer. Pomorie has amazing wetlands, sea salt pans*, mud bathing**, sandy beaches, and an Art Deco open air cinema. Films start at night fall, you look out over the sea. Nesebar and Sozopol are historic seaside ports with everything from Roman to C18 architecture, just as impressive in their way as Dubrovnik. * + ** The mud is volcanic in origin, and black. The salt crystallises with a bit of mud...
Howard
It was Alupka in Crimea that I was looking at. I'm not sure if it's in the Ukraine or Russia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alupka#/media/File:Alupka2.jpg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alupka#/media/File:VorontsovskiPalace.jpg

South Crimea. Very definitely under Russian control.
Kitten Mittens
I was wondering if anybody might know where one can source a bottle of Crljenak Kaštelanski, without the requirement to pay more in shipping than the wine costs? Any help would be greatly appreciated

ballaughbiker
Quilp's St Emilions or a Margaux from the other side of the river. If you want to rough it a bit and you like reds look for a Pécharment from further up the Dordogne from St Emilion. Exceptional for the price. P.K.
I'm sorry but every wine bore I ever met ALWAYS mentioned Margaux and St Em. Why always French and their south west? Never mind Bordeaux because the Languedoc Roussillon area is the most productive wine region on the planet. Nothing wrong with their product either. But even so. During many visits to Verona for the opera season a bottle of Bardolino to chase down your lamb cutlets is a must. Piazza Erbe or Piazza Bra to suit... victorian dad
If you like a full-bodied red forget that awful French crap, the Aussies are the cream of the crop. California comes a close second but it's way overpriced.
woolley
Mrs W in conversation with a friend happened to say she went down to the cellar for another bottle of wine. "Oohh. You have a wine cellar. How lovely." "No. We have a dirty old cellar where we keep a few bottles of wine."
