For the sake of light coloured carpets I usually remove my shoes. But the holes in the socks are an embarrassment I've learned to live with...

"Keep them on, darling. Please."

Isn't carpet dreadfully passé anyway among the trendsetters nowadays? Perhaps the vogue for hard flooring started as a result of the preponderance of dog shit in the home counties. I'm not sure it's a fashion I approve of, nonetheless. I mean who on Earth, when overtaken by lust, wants to get down and personal on a cold, shiny oak or ceramic surface? No matter how well polished, wood also has the ever present danger of splinters although this may bring an additional frisson of danger to the proceedings. All of that sliding around.

You really can't beat fabric so call me old fashioned, but I think we will stick with carpet, shoes and the vanishingly small risk of stomach upset and ocular toxocariasis.
