Why is it that the staff at the self check out did not think to place used scanners back in their cradles at the entrance so that new customers could use them. Instead, there was a huge queue waiting for scanners, a huge queue to use the self check out. Unlike other major supermarkets, crowding is not helped by the huge metal grills of cardboard boxes blocking aisles and staff getting in the way with their trolleys collecting items for delivery. In the U.K. this work is done out of hours. needless to say, after helpfully suggesting to staff that they might replace the scanners in the holders I left for shoprite. Yes the prices are higher, I can’t get what I want but at least it isn’t bedlam. Oh for a decent supermarket here. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

One way to avoid the delay would be for the person to shop for themselves. Never tried the home delivery as I heard of the substitutions they send if your first choice isn't available. None of those would explain why you have to book deliveries four weeks in advance (even the Steamie isn't that slow). The simple fact is that they are booked up in advance because home delivery is more popular than the ability to fulfil it. Demand exceeds supply, so as soon as they become available the slots get taken. It doesn't actually take many customers wanting home delivery to do this if regular users know how to pick up regular slots for say a weekly delivery. Which they will or they wouldn't be regular. I suspect there's no real incentive for Tesco to increase the number of delivery vans and so slots because they almost certainly have much bigger overheads on the service than they would in the UK - mainly because they need to serve the whole Island, so average distance to customer will be higher. It's one of their most successful stores across the entire British Isles. They do need more vans on the island for the home delivery option as they are jammed packed every single day, and UK wide they need a better algorithm for their delivery vans (A driver will go to Peel to Castletown to Peel to Ramsey to Peel to Port Erin rather than doing them by areas) They do also employ a vast proportion of workers who are immigrants to the island rather than employing locals, yet get away with it because they are Tesco. You can only book 3 weeks in advance (except from mid December to 1st January, when it is 4). Slots 21 days ahead are released each morning around 03.00. By 09.00 the slots 21 days ahead are all full. They also release a few slots for the next day, so you can pick up short notice slots the morning of the day before. There are too few slots because there aren't enough trucks or drivers. There isn't room at Lake Road. Tesco applied for planning to extend the store, stock a greater range put in a mezzanine and increase the loading bay space for home deliveries, meaning more vans and more slots, and to create collect by car space. And they are really also using the shortage of home delivery as a lever to promote more general expansion in a very profitable market for them[1], so there is little incentive to solve the problem when they probably aren't making that much out of home delivery. As no other supermarkets offer it, they're unlikely to lose people who have to have it - they'll just need to get up in the middle of the night. Everyone else will just have to keep on driving. The last two times I have been there have been no scanners left in the cradles because the staff have been ‘too busy’ to move 40 of them from the drop off to the cradles which men’s the charge runs down this delaying things further.
