What proportion of the vote did Shimmins get then?

Shimmins got 1357, so marginally better  ...

Number of voters in Middle - 4,445

Number voting in Middle - 2,307

Number voting for Shimmins - 1357

Percentage of vote  - 59% (1357 / 2,307)

Percentage of people who could have voted - 30.5% (1357/4,445)

I suppose the 14% is derived from the fact that there are 8890 potential votes and he only got 1205.

Yes, well they way they arrived at was -

30% of the vote with a 52% = 14%

But even the most popular candidate ever, one getting everybody to turn out  and vote for him would only get 50% on that calculation.

You've got them both on the same number of votes, unless you're suggesting Shimmins got 1357 votes but Quayle had 1357 people voting for him

Yeah forgot to change Quayle to Shimmin when I cut and pasted. But you knew that.

And what's the betting that Rob Callister romps home in at the polls in November?

Of course he will because he keeps his constituents informed and responds to them saying he will try to help. Now regardless of whether he has been good or bad people want to feel as though they are being listened to and rob converses with them. Usually you dont see candidates until it comes up to election again the then disappear for the next 5 years. I'm not going to comment on how well/poorly he has done as an mhk I'm just saying listening and updating people go a long way

Doing something goes a bit further,

Although the candidates canvassing on here who think politics is a family business or worth a try, go for it, get your income doubled, trebled and sit saying yay or nay accordingly.    Rob C has made 60k a year writing and copying social media, if he can do it anyone can.
I have a feeling the public expect nothing so will keep getting nothing.

@Keiran Hannifin

your sentencing policy is poorly thought out and contradictory.

If we had what the public wanted ( how do we really meaningfully measure that ) then we’d still have the death penalty, birching, defenestration, rolling witches down Slieau Whallian, ducking stools, castration.

To have the same sentence as the last one, presumes all offences,  under an identical charge, have the same features, the same circumstances, the same damage or injury,  and the offenders have the same characteristics and means to pay.

Thats just not true. Every offence is individual and has its own set of aggravating and mitigating factors. Every offender is an individual and has their own set of aggravating and mitigating attributes.

Sentencing is an art, not a science. However there are guidelines issued to all sentencers. They set out, offence by offence, the things to be taken into account, the starting point, the range, the additions for aggravating factors and the reductions for mitigating ones.

You'd do well to look them up and gain an understanding. Sentencing isn’t random, or capricious.

I think it might be more prudent to look at the current sentencing and see if there are areas that can be improved as opposed to "blanket sentencing" which is what seems to be being suggested here. There is definitely a lack of severity for certain crimes on this island and I do think that perhaps sex offences for example should carry a heftier and longer sentence than say shop lifting (which doesn't always seem to be the case). Perhaps the key to prevention and protection is a longer sentence for punishment, more enhanced rehabilitation whilst incarcerated and greater in the community support after release to monitor the offender. Perhaps all sex offenders have to spend a year on a gps tag for example after release and have multi weekly visits from a community specialist that checks up on them and their activities?. And have to attend a sexual harm prevention group or something on a weekly basis etc etc.
