What do we need to attract more tourists?

It's simple. You need to play to the island's strengths while exploiting the weaknesses of the opposition. Like this:

Were you inexplicably bounced off your flight due to "scheduling"?

Had an annoyingly long wait at passport control where the air con has failed turning the concourse into the Black Hole of Calcutta?

Fed up with the beach sand burning your feet making you drop your Factor 50? (proof against a nuclear strike!)

Had enough of the sweltering heat turning a stroll to a beach-front bar into a trial of strength only to find they have no ice and serve only warm water in two-litre bottles a gift from a grateful tourist board?

Been evacuated one time too many as a wildfire razes your holiday accommodation to the ground including consuming your clothes, money and passports?

Then come to Mannin.

To get here just pop on a ferry full of jolly matelots who inexplicably close the bar early but a border control with stern looking heavily armed Civil Guards are a thing of the past.

Once here we can guarantee balmy summer days frequently consisting of mainly hail and storm and tempest but sunburn is something you can completely cease worrying about. Here you will find plenty of time for introspection as there is little else to do. You will also find inspiration from the strange runes you find on the bottom of your glass when trying manx delicacies like a quartet of stewed rams horns, best scrag-end neck of whale and so forth.

The sand on the beaches is never too hot but bathers do need to be aware of the dogshit, dangers of hypothermia and the odd jellyfish bloom.

Come to your senses. Come to the Isle of Man.

You won't wait to get back....

It's simple.

Push us an outdoor adventure island.

Cycling, walking and all those extreme sport type things pointy shoe wearing, trendy beard tosser types love.  They have the spare cash.

Lob a couple of Spa hotels up with a bath at the bottom of the bed and fake timber panels type places, and then their blonde girlfriends from HR and PR would be happy.

Fix the bomb site that is Douglas -

Obtain a bond from developers in case they fail to complete a job.  This can then be used to offer an incentive for another developer, or used to tidy a site up.  Stops that half built look like there is in town now.

Brewery is killing hospitality trade. Getting food anywhere in afternoon is challenging now, Brewery pubs hours on a Friday reduced again to 3-11,

growing up in pub trade consistently and been open were always 2 of the most important things, people go to a closed door a couple times they don’t go back. Thankfully still some free houses that open And offer food other than 5-8’

Surely the first step in considering how to develop the tourist industry and attract more tourists should be to undertake an analysis of the types and numbers of rooms / places that are available for such tourists?

i.e

the number of single rooms in hotels and guest houses

the number of double rooms in hotels and guest houses

the number of self catering properties which can take various numbers of guests

the number of permanent  camp site places that are available

etc. etc.

From this baseline it should be possible to identify ways to maximise use of the accommodation and also marketing potential.

I’m certain this is something that has been done, that is why our aspirations are so low. Growing the bed spaces would put a lot of pressure on government to do something about our miserable offering.

That’s very true, often arranged to meet at Oscar’s for example, to find it closed. Usually end up in the Thirsty Pigeon!
