Velocity Girl

Not a proper post I was working on research for a future post in which Primal Scream will feature, and I couldn't resist posting this -Primal Scream - Velocity GirlIn which Bobby & co take 85 seconds, to pre-empt and render redundant the first Stone Roses lp. Unfortunately, it doesn't really fit the post I'm working on (or the band's Greatest Hits for some reason) so I'm posting it here.

Entertainment!

In My inaugural post I mentioned that the title of this blog comes from a line in the Gang of Four song "Return the Gift" from their 1980 debut album Entertainment! Those of that spend our too much of our time trawling through internet forums will know that a staple thread of these endeavours is "What are your favourite albums of all-time ... ever!" And each time I post a different list, but 5 albums are guaranteed inclusion - Pet Sounds, Revolver, Screamedelica (all of which I guess you'll know

Thoughts Inspired By The Cutter

One of the weird things about joining the digital revolution is that suddenly I've gained a knowledge of the vastness of my record collection. Before when someone asked "how many cds do you have?" the answer was simple "lots". But my definition of a lot is different to another persons. To someone with 50 cds 200 is a lot. To me and my friends its a start. Now, thanks to iTunes and iPod I can quantify lots - it is precisely 27,203 tunes. Of course I've barely begun to transfer my vinyl into digit

Recovered Covers 2 : Meat Puppets

Meat Puppets - Lake of FireContinuing the Nirvana Unplugged In New York connection - three songs by The Meat Puppets were included and Cris and Kurt from the band joined the show. All three tracks from Unplugged (Plateau, Oh Me & Lake of Fire) are taken from the band's definitive album Meat Puppets II.Prior to the release of II the Meat Puppets were a pretty run-of-the-mill, SST Punk band, however with this release there is a dramatic stuff, bringing in influences from Country and Folk m

Ghosts From The Past.......

Well not exactly but I had rather a shock today when an old friend who no longer resides on the island strolled into the shop. I guess it's been around 2½ years since I've seen him and it was a real breath of fresh air to do so, if a little spooky. I went for a smoke after he'd left and reflected on our conversation and a whole heap of really great memories came flooding back. I really miss those days, when nothing really mattered much and life was just about having a bloody good time and a laug

Covers Recovered 1 : The Vaselines

Ok after the other night's Cavalcade of Covers I thought the next few posts could be the mirror image - the orignals of songs that are more famous when done by someone else. So, first up... The Vaselines - Jesus Doesn't Want Me As A SunbeamThe Vaselines were Glaswegian Indie Popsters who were particularly beloved by Kurt Cobain. Nirvana covered a number of the band's tunes - Molly's Lips, Son of a Gun and this one which turns up on Unplugged In New York and there is a version on the new With The

It's A Cavalcade Of Covers

Sorry, no coherent theme today just a fairly random selection of cover versions. Ray Barretto - Pastime Paradise Another Stevie Wonder cover (after yesterday's Superstition) I seem to like covers of Stevie's songs more than the original versions. Here a track from from the Songs In The Key of Life album gets an angry Latinised version from Ray Baretto. I love the way he almost spits out the lyrics - "Tell me who of them will come to beHow many of them are you and meDissipationRace RelationsConso

Late Night Shopping (a Rant)

Well, working in retail (in Ramsey) I have made the effort to open on the designated dates for the 3 years that I've had my shop in Parliament Street. To date, I've not exactly been wowed by the crowds during this time and I'm beginning to wonder if there is any point to it. I'm sure there are a few shops that do very well during this time but I bet there's a heck of a lot more that don't. I don't really mind working the extra hours (was a 13 hour shift yesterday though) but I do mind the fact t

G.i. Funk

G.I. Funk - if Tarrantino had directed Platoon this would be the soundtrack.Today's tracks are taken from a compilation called G.I. Funk I picked up on Camden Market in the summer. The c.d. purports to be a collection of Vietnam War era funk tunes, played for the entertainment of US Troops on R 'n' R leave from the war. The premise is that after a hard time evading Charlie your average African-American G.I. would take his dollars to a whore-house in Saigon, Tokyo or Manilla, where with his chose

Funnies

I'm sure I'm not alone in wishing I had a camera to hand to catch all of those funny moments that happen in life. Well today, I managed to do just that afer vowing to always have my camera to hand after missing too many of them.To set the story, I was glancing out of the window at work and noticed an ambulance parked outside (not that unusual I guess, it's often parked up in Parliament Street. What made it different this time was the fact that a fixed penalty ticket had been attached to the wind

Late Great But Not Dead

Daniel Johnston - not dead. Daniel Johnston's official website is headed "Artist, singer, songwriter and pilgrim of indie music with 30 albums, hundreds of songs, and thousands of fans" - hardly "100,000,000 Millions Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong" is it?The Texan singer-songerwriter and "Folk Artist" has a troubled mental state and institutionalisation, which informs his work. Johnston it appears falls in love often - heavily and ill-fatedly. He suffers crisies of confidence and artistic belief. For

I Walk On Gilded Splinters

The Pinetoppers: Johnny Jenkins at the front, and Otis Redding in white. In 1971 Johnny Jenkins took Dr. John's voodoo cajun classic I Walk On Gilded Splinters and added some funk, dirty blues swamp guitar and seemingly the Polyphone Spree on backing vocals. The results are stunning. Also featured here are Cher's ex Duane Allman and what sounds like a million drummers.Samples from this track turned up in Beck's Loser and Oasis' Go Let It Out, and the track reached a greater prominence when it was

Brrrrrrrrrr

It's cold tonight, more so because my boiler refuses to fire up for more than 10 seconds! Its been playing up for the last week or so and I thought I had the problem licked (the wind blows the pilot light out when it is coming from a certain direction) but, having totally secured the outlet from the wind from all 4 directions tonight (utilising various bits of garden furniture and the wheelie bin!), it still isn't working and I'm fecking freezing! I hope it's working in the morning because I real

What To Do When You Have One Monitor But Two Pc's

Just what do you do when you have only one monitor but two (or more!) computers...Well, my first thought was 'transfer the HDD from the old one to the new one'My next thought was 'ask someone who might know'My final thought was...GoogleAnswer:To set up a two (or more) computer network you need NICs (network interface cards) one for each computer. These plug into the computer motherboard (usually into a PCI slot). The only instance where you wouldn't need a NIC to connect a computer to a network
