  1. Even subsidising the SP with 1 million a year could bring an extra 25,000 foot passengers per year . So just run that by me again how a proposal that "could" bring an extra 6,000 people per year ashore for 8 hours max and will require long millions before they even start work on any proposed project is a better bet?
  2. All joking aside a 50 million minimum gamble for an estimated 60 quid per head return spend is the last thing the IOM needs at this moment in time .If we must gamble let's not stick our necks into the blade quite so quickly boys eh? So the question now becomes what do we want to achieve and how to do it without bankrupting the IOM? Subsidy has to be the answer !! If we take into account that Manx Farm owners are paid in the region of 7mill per year (Please correct if wrong !) for Countryside care , gov is well overstaffed , and we have various other IOM loss making ventures that will never turn a profit under current conditions ,it's clear the Gov is happy to subsidise . So, here's my take (once again!) if the GOV is happy to subsidise , ""SUBSIDISE THE CARRIERS"" but only over and above numbers which they already bring to the Island !! Let's say we take a small gamble with 7 mill figure available per year and if we can't give it away it stays in the pot!! Subsidy obviously does not apply for TT Period! IOM SP foot passengers @ 40 pounds per head return - A full subsidy could potentially see an extra 175,000 passengers per year visiting the IOM. SP 1 vehicle 5.5m @ 250? per vehicle return - A full subsidy could potentially see an extra 28,000 vehicles per year visiting the IOM. Low cost Air fares based on Easyjet @ 100 per head return - A full subsidy could potentially see an extra 70,000 people per year visiting the IOM . All these carriers are already here and in operation , and do not require millions spent on consultants and experts!! ETA. To put the numbers in context IOM Govs own figures show that in 2015 there were 134,610 period visitors staying in paid accommodation and 2879 day trippers visiting the Island and likely half came for the TT.
  3. Yup! Force 10's are not uncommon in winter , in some respects I want to see this thing built because I'll be sat there on Douglas head with my flask and sarnies watching when the South Easterly 10 and big tides combine ,it's going to be epic!
  4. Orkney got £4 million into the local economy from cruise passengers With a deepwater ship berth costing in the hundreds of millions I cannot see any way of repaying the cost before the thing wears out To give you an example of a cheaper tourism investment look at Majorca. They had funds available and were considering building yet another marina, instead they invested in making the islands roads cycle friendly by widening some of the main routes and putting a 1.5 meter wide cycleway on one side The result was a massive uptake in cycle holidays in the spring & autumn when the weather was cool enough I was there last April and they had 25,000 cyclists a week going through the place, using hotels, cafes, bike hire shops, the airlines & ferries and spending considerably more than a tea & scone day tripper A huge and ongoing return for a modest investment http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-30794701 The Orkney facility also has a natural Lee on 3 sides ,the Manx proposal is to place a floating pontoon out 350m into the exposed tide rip running down along Douglas Head, along with Mr Uglands own projections not stacking up are reason enough in my book not to entertain this ill thought out stupidity. Unfortunately it seems certain people have had the ear of "Government "for quite a while now , If they're reckless enough to go ahead with this proposal it has the potential to be the biggest f*ck up yet amongst all the other major f*ck ups down our years of plenty .
  5. Oh yes the appetite is there alright the sharks are circling as we speak . Mmmm !!! 50 million smackeroonies!!
  6. So Mr Ugland is quoted by Manx Radio as saying a 50 mill investment would pay for itself in 5yrs! He's also quoted as saying a deepwater cruise berth would bring in an extra 6000 people per year at average spend of 60 squid ??? He needs to get his spiel right I think! Then again ,looking at who he's dealing with he doesn't really!!
  7. Totally agree, they appear to be suggesting putting a 360 odd metre floating pontoon smack in the middle of the tidal flow running down the back of Douglas head and in very close proximity to gas storage facilities .Love to see how that stacks up in the middle of winter with severe easterly gales . You just could not make this shit up!!
  8. What can I say you state clearly that the mock up graphics are nonsense ,without showing any realistic planning as to what you muppets propose ,but obviously expect IOM GOV to pitch in 50 mill or so to fund your fantasy. "'Go big or not at all"" . Fucking astounding!! ETA. Fair play though you've turned the cruise liner around from the original cartoon!
  9. Ramsey bay would be even better ,the most sheltered Bay on the Island , Utilizing the Queens Pier location only problem would be the sandy terrain !
  10. Link for more gloss Oh wow that's amazing. Are they going to blow up the tower of refuge and conister rock then? Yup they'll have to and also knock at least 10m of the Armoured Breakwater losing the Dolphin as well as blasting out hundreds of thousands of tons of bedrock ,most probably undermining Alexandra Pier and surrounding areas in the process. That is if they intend to put it where they show on the cartoon. Why are we paying these people ? A blind man with a stick can see it's one more moronic idea after one more moronic idea . As said before it would be cheaper to get the SP figures of all tourism related traffic per year and pay them a 100% subsidy on all motorists and foot passengers above the last years numbers ,then try to offset it against increased tourist spend figures !!
  11. The deep water cruise liner berth was discussed in a previous topic complete with mock up plans ,but I can't remember which one ? Could somebody please re-post the proposed plan showing the harbour and Douglas bay ? I just want to reinforce to myself how fucking stupid and costly this whole new fiasco is going to be if it ever gets the go ahead !!
  12. They'd be better off buying back the steam Packet and giving free travel too and from the IOM ,if they want tourists.
  13. How can bringing people to the Island to spend money (do you think they pay zero for the services before coming ashore?) be stupid? Because it's all about the process and keeping people busy ,certain people will indeed become very wealthy if they were indeed stupid enough to go ahead with this bollocks but it won't be the Manx people . Frighteningly though, on my last trip home I was speaking to someone who had actually been approached to supply plant etc for this project if it went ahead ,so they are seriously thinking of undertaking this massive gamble, they're f***king dangerous this lot and if this "project" is the best they can come up with then we are truly ruled by idiots!
  14. Here we f**king go again !! To quote the immortal Stuart Baggs ""We haven't just got one white Elephant ,we've got a whole field of white elephants with room for more"" !! The stupidity of these people never ceases to astound me!
