Rocketman Posted August 24, 2010 Share Posted August 24, 2010 Interestingly...they dont mention the mountain of derelect properties, in prime locations on their portfolio, none of which look like being developed anytime soon and only serve to make the Island look scruffy, tired and skint. Not a great advert for a country which has aspirations. Why are they allowed to keep the Castle Mona, Golf Links etc and do nothing with them ? Agreed, surely the Castle Mona must be a listed building? Apart from the fire service using it for extended ladder practice and film crews using the car park, it seems to be left to the pigeons and herring gulls. Now that they don't have to pay any more for the "Hilton" franchise there should be more cash to do that sort of thing. Gala (who owned the entire operation including the hotel) sold out to Sefton group some time ago. The hotel is a requirement of the casino licence, you cannot have a casino in IoM without a hotel attached, Gala also had the same franchise arrangement when running the hotel side of the business. It is, although you wouldn't know it by the way it's being left to rot. It's sad really. Much of Douglas' history, and hence its identity, seems to be ignored or dispensed with at a whim: The Douglas Hotel (also once a home for the Duke of Atholl) is in complete disrepair and awaits an illustrious fate as a convenience store; The Villiers is long gone; much of the land that gave the Castle Mona it's sense of majesty was built on and now the building itself is left empty; the future is uncertain for Park Road School (which I believe was the first publicly funded secondary school on the Island), with the Government's purchase of the nearby Bowling Green hotel under a description like 'strategic acquisition' sounding particularly ominous; and so on.
