Tarne
Cycling will be prohibited on the mountain during the Festival of Motorcycling. Now they've done it for this, it's likely they'll do it for TT next year too. Superlike!
Bobbie Bobster
Anyone able to trace down the statutory road closure notice for this? Of course I'm sure that this prohibition is made under appropriate legislation and/or regulations. ETA - the notice on the DOI site is just a copy of the facebook post, no further legal references. BeachBoy
So because motorist's will be riding and driving even more inappropriately than usual, other legitimate Road users get forced off the road. How about more legislation for safer driving and riding around cyclists instead of punishing them. 30mph all Island speed limit during TT and the festival could work. :-o
Bobbie Bobster
I'd rather have an informed, non-hyperbolic debate about what that ban means in terms of the perception of the road safety of the event as a whole, and whether the law of unintended consequences might apply to this decision. And indeed whether it is fully lawful.

Why do cyclists voluntarily want to wipe themselves out by riding in such wildly inappropriate circumstances? Im sure if the Mountain Road was on fire there would still be a number of cyclists who would assert their rights to ride the road. I won't even take the car up there at TT and MGP time because of the danger so quite why being stopped from cycling up there get cyclists so mad I really don't know. Unless they all have a secret death wish and / or they are suicidal.

Well thought through argument you have there.
notwell
He's right though Beachboy. Cyclists are a danger to themselves up there in TT week but more importantly they are a danger to other road users. With the road up there being two way this is even more the case. Sensible move and long overdue.
RIchard Britten
All road users are equal under the law, except motorcyclists and speeding twats are more equal than others.
WTF
shame it is limited to the mountain section. be interesting to see if cav would get prosecuted though?? me thinks not.
The Duck of Atholl
Perhaps the sensible solution for the TT and MGP periods would be to impose similar restrictions to that of a motorway in the UK so no cycles, mopeds or learner riders/drivers etc
Bobbie Bobster
But it's not a motorway. And it's a question whether there is any basis in law from prohibiting certain classes of road user from certain pieces of road that are fundamentally indistinguishable from other pieces. Unless they all have a secret death wish and / or they are suicidal. But accident statistics show that the people most likely to have the accidents in these circumstances are motorcyclists. So on your argument, it should be them who are banned from the Mountain Road. And I'd also like to see the legal basis for this rather than just the usual DoI "Because we want to do it".
