Their dad was a well respected Baptist minister, but in private he was domineering and physically abusive towards his wife. In a moment of weakness she turned to his brother for support. When her husband found out he tried to force her to have an illegal abortion, so she ran away. He wouldn't let her see her kids again, and filled their heads with poisonous lies about their mother. Naturally they ended up hating their mother, unaware of how their father had treated her, and that she was filled with guilt, remorse and despair. Probably.
