just order some soil with whatever else you have ordered to get the weight past the post office monopoly.  i'm surprised the government aren't trying to make emails illegal so we all have to go back to letters.

I'd suggest that whatever Hermes and Co. deliver is a drop in the ocean compared to what IoM Post already handle, be it Amazon, Ebay or whoever. This is just an attempt to hoover up the crumbs, is it a sign of desperation? There were some rare arguments trotted out by the Scrutiny Committee about the "gigs" putting 5 vehicles up a lane to deliver 5 parcels instead of IoM Post doing it in a one-er too. Such environmental and road safety concerns.

If there's concerns about the PO finances and pensions situation, perhaps the Committee should look towards management and the actuarial advice that's achieved this position, don't blame Joe Postie or Hermes - it's the usual IoM syndrome, the buck stops at the bottom.

IoM Post have previously stated that they've handled an unprecedented volume of mail during this lockdown period, are the financial figures out for this yet?

Why would anyone set up in the private sector here if at some stage government can just rock up and steal your living from you by passing laws which seek to prioritize it’s income needs over yours as a taxpayer paying for them to put you out of business?

Well, quite - not something you expect from advocates of the free market like Quayle CoMin

One of the issues with Hermès is that they are not licensed, pay no tax or NI in IOM and don’t pay sick pay etc to driver’s.

IOM post are licensed and pay all NI etc as well as paying a proper wage & conditions.

if the public want companies that don’t contribute to island, offer poor conditions then carry on as is and a subsidy may have to be paid from their taxes,

Hermes have made a deal with the GMB in the UK - does it apply here, or not?

How would they enforce it? Weigh every packet that comes here individually? Its nonsence and would be another nail in the islands coffin. What if I order a under 1kg item and get it delivered to Ship2Man because the supplier does not deliver to the island directly? Will they have to hand it over to the PO?

They need to face up to the fact that Royal Mail/ our Post Office are an industry with a diminishing market and plan accordingly, ie reduce size. Not steal buisiness from private companies. What next? We want 2kg parcels? Then 5kg? All white goods? You can see where this is heading.....................

It will also reduce choice as Pongo says as the big online retailers won’t deal with IOM Post when Hermès already delivers everything for them across Europe at an agreed cost under a rigid SLA. They’ll just say we no longer deliver to the IOM.

That's quite right. Maybe it's even part of the plan.

It's  not right that the big online retailers have exclusive contracts with Hermes, they also use royal Mail, DPD etc. we have had deliveries from all sources when ordering online.

Amazon are considering employing their own delivery drivers as not happy with Hermes service amongst other reasons. The environmental argument of having multiple delivery drivers going around the same roads every day will gain traction imho

Cost to the individual will always trump all other considerations with the vast majority of people. They don't give a tinker's cuss about the number of drivers on the roads. They're more interested in how far they can make their money spread to the end of the week or month.

Well I disagree a lot of younger buyers who make up most of online buying are more interested in the environment that the older posters on this site and are prepared to pay a bit more to protect the environment.

Hmmm, what people say and what people do can be quite different things altogether.
