You assume Corlett will be more vulnerable, if only based on last time's result, but as ever the campaign will matter. Also interesting to see a lawyer standing. One of the strange thing about Manx politics is the lack of lawyers involved. There's only Poole-Wilson in recent times and she's only qualified in England. A decent lawyer is taking a pay cut and potentially making themselves unemployable in the future.

That's no more true than it is in any other country of the world and yet elsewhere politics is full of them. It's not due to lack of lawyers either, there about 10 times the number on the Island there were 50 years ago.
GreyWolf
The quiet women of manx politics maybe a little nervous of losing her seat now.

In the UK you can go and work in another city, over here you would be unemployable unless you moved off island.
GreyWolf
Yeah it’s possibly a salary drop but maybe his interest is in national politics and good luck to him, also am guessing once in the big government machine you can network and find out all sorts you never knew anything about before always handy in business.
Holte End
I personally would never vote for a lawyer. I was always taught, a lawyer is only as good as oneself. if they fuck up, it is you who has to pays the price. This also applies to accountants and doctors. This also includes electing them as MHK's, Just take the current incumbents and I rest my case milord.

Um, the Green Party leader is a lawyer, & there's another one who's surname begins with B (I can't recall it) who I think has written a book on or near the subject Historically it's been regarded as very bad form for young advocates to stand for the Keys - perhaps it was regarded as detracting from the true merit of the Manx Law Society Edited August 3, 2021 by SleepyJoe

No one at the Law Society raised any objection. There have been several advocates, historically. Last one elected was Howard Simcocks who was MHK and then MLC. I think EW Fargher, of Dickinson’s, was also MHK. The problem was that Keys standing Orders prevented your firm from doing Parliamentary business if you were an MHK. Fargher’s firm were advocates for Douglas Corporation. Couldn’t present petitions to borrow, extend boundaries, whilst Eric was MHK. Beckett is the author. Andrew Langan Newton is the Green Party guy, Now Damian.

code99
Mr Ciappelli's electioneering pledges look sensible and reasonable. I hope he will give the two incumbents a run for their money. IMHO, neither incumbent deserves to be re-elected. One of them is an MHK who seems to have an extremely low public profile, and the other one has an extremely high public profile that is not commensurate with what has in reality been delivered. It goes without saying that only sweeping reforms across the whole of the Civil Service (the people who run this Island) will achieve any practical improvements. It is time that the MHKs get a grip on what is going on. My view has always been that the CSs should be employed on contracts and only be renewed subject to successfully delivered KPIs, etc. Good luck to whomever will be elected, they will need it. SleepyJoe
Mr Thomas will be in a much stronger position to join the new government in a senior role, unless - God forbid - the furtive conservatives manage to scrape together another administration Edited August 9, 2021 by SleepyJoe

What gives you the idea that he is not? I could be wrong, but I can't remember him ever expressing any socialist, let alone Marxist, views.
