Unless, of course, you’re really a Bufton-Tufton, ex military type, on a huge military pension, Telegraph reading, Conservative who doesn’t believe in free at point of delivery health care ( including mental health ) for all.

What you’re espousing in that post is a bit “I’m alright Jack” or “let them eat cake”,

That's me to a T. I am shamed and named. 🤫

Things have gone very quiet down South. I would have thought more contenders with the announcements already made by Watterson and Skelly. It's a light field.

What announcement has Mr Watterson made?

Well only that he is standing for President.  It's assumed that he will stand again for Rushen if he doesn't get it - and presumably Skelly does.  Poole-Wilson was the only other credible candidate (not that Skelly's credible, but that mightn't stop him getting it as the CoMin candidate[1]).  We won't know the result of that till the start of Tynwald on 20 July.

But given that there will be at least one vacancy, very probably two, in Rushen it's a surprise we haven't seen more than two candidates. You might expect Mark Kemp to have another go for instance.

[1]  Rodan seems such an obvious choice that we forget that Eddie Teare was also nominated in 2016 (by Bell so literally the CoMin candidate).  Rodan only got in by 16-12 (2 abstentions, 2 absent) - though it was an electronic vote there was unusually no list of who voted for whom.

Incredibly, Skelly looks to be a shoe-in for President. So I’m told by an MHK. (Not Skelly!!). Mind you, a non-job for a non-brain. In that event, Watterson will stand for Keys again and be re-elected. Whether he is reinstated as Speaker is another matter of course.

Was an Accountant, became a teacher according to his 2016 Manifesto

Quote

I changed my career four years ago, moving away from a lucrative life as an accountant and I became a teacher. I’d worked hard for eighteen years making rich people richer and for what? I wasn’t making a difference to anyone’s lives. I wasn’t helping to make the world a better place. This bothered me and so I decided to do something about it. I became a teacher. I undertook the journey into teaching at my own expense, paying for my qualification and my degree myself (despite that I was eligible for financial assistance, government refused to offer it but this only made me more determined). I volunteered for six months to get my foot in the door, worked at virtually minimum wage for two years thereafter and now I am qualified. Money was never my motivator. Seeing the look on a student’s face when they achieve something. . .that’s what motivates me.
