Move to IOM and work.

Hi all ,

I am looking to move to the Isle from Hampshire if possible. My Mum lives there and is getting on and not been well so would like to be there to see more of her and help out with chores etc , plus i really like it there and not so much here anymore.

First problem is finding somewhere to live , your prices are now the same as here , my budget up to £250k is starter homes which are in short supply and either snapped up by locals hopefully , or investors.

Anyway , if i could find somewhere , i just wanted to ask about work and the possibility of finding anything. I am not an accountant , Doctor , teacher , nurse etc so believe i would need a work permit.  I am a late fifties male , still fit and have mostly been a mechanical fitter , currently working for a small company doing assembly. I don't need a lot , doesn't have to be high salary , part=time would do. Just wanted people's opinions on whether i would have much chance of finding anything for 20-25 hours a week as islanders  have priority , rightly so.

Try Triumph Actuation in Onchan, Ronaldsway Aircraft Company Ballasalla, IOM Creamery, Ramsey Bakery, IoM Government DOI, MUA to name a few.

You'll get a job over here no problem, the work permit thing is a pain in the ass, it's for the employer to apply, but staff in many areas including your own are in very short supply so you won't have a problem.

Also look at locate.im see if they can do anything to help you, I don't think they're particularly busy 😀

Thanks for your reply , very helpful list. Wasn't sure i would even be considered and don't want to deprive a local.

A bigger problem seems to be property , your market is even madder than ours. First one for a fair while came on late yesterday in Peel , estate- agent office closed , my Mum drove up and an under offer sign up already. I get the impression investors are buying these up without even viewing.

Good to get my intention out there anyway ,  i will look into the work thing a bit more , haven't done a C.V for years.

Yes property will be your problem, there's a lack of it and what there is is overpriced, generally but especially since Covid. Even rental property is in very short supply.

If you do find something that suits go for it quickly, don't let the lack of job stop you, that's the easy bit, especially if you can manage a month or two without one.

Thanks again , very reassuring. I can last a fair while without anything , time to explore the island and sort my Mums bungalow and garden a bit. At least my Mum can view and put in an offer for me if anything comes up.

Could you live with your mum initially? That would make things easier.
