For all those forum members who think teachers have a cushy, well/over-paid job that they could do soooo much better, here's your chance to jump on the education gravy train and show us all how it's done.

No thanks. My mother taught at Ballaugh, I know what it's like. Also way too old, way too...

It’s a sensible initiative. But not sure how many life-skills a teacher who has never left the IOM for any form of training would be able to impart to pupils.

Anyone who's made the effort to get off island to get trained up in any field isn't going to settle for a (current) teacher's salary.

So you’re saying this is a way of funding a few low ambition people who don’t want to go to the Metropolis to study who we can get on the cheap and retain then?

Could be. Seems the Govt will consider any option other than actually paying them.

Always read the links:

Prospective candidates should already hold an honours degree in English, maths or a science subject

To get one of those they will have had to have left the Island for quite a lot of training.

This isn't a new thing - on and off there have been exemptions or fast-tracking for teacher training for graduates in hard to place subjects such as maths and sciences for many, many decades.  What they are doing is offering help to those wishing to switch careers to have some training without leaving the Island, rather than being thrown straight in.

Teacher training on Island is not new... our youngest did 6 months in Onchan & Murrays Road through an accredited PGCE course with Liverpool Uni (I think). Not sure why DoE stopped it to be honest.

Manchester Met., I think it was.

Both leading tutors retired at the same time and no one thought ahead long enough to work out what to do when that happened, so it just folded. It was actually one of the best courses going. Competence led with more time in the classroom than any other equivalent course on offer. I think the 'fast track' version was nine months in all. A lot of hard work in a short space of time but it turned out a lot of good teachers.

Yes, I'm pretty sure our daughter was on as some sort of fast track scheme, the first three months (or thereabouts) locked in a room with tutors and then at least six months out in classrooms. She absolutely loved it. In fact she was the first out of the house each morning.... mind, she never did that when she was pupil!
