  1. As people on here don't seem inclined to read the Report here is the first recommendation. 'Recommendation 1 That Tynwald is of the opinion that any Order in Council which extends to the Island provisions of any Act of the UK Parliament, should be laid before Tynwald at the earliest opportunity after it has been made; and that the Standing Orders Committee of Tynwald should consider and report on how such laying might be guaranteed. 8. The UK Parliament at Westminster last legislated for the Isle of Man without the consent of Tynwald in 1967. The ability of Westminster so to legislate, although not actually exercised, had a visible influence on Manx legislation in the 1990s. In a series of debates on beneficial ownership registers during the years 2017 to 2019, Westminster parliamentarians appear to have given serious consideration once again to taking such a step.'
  2. There are lots of UK universities the island could have teamed up with. https://edurank.org/cs/ai/gb/
  3. That's the trouble with our MHKs. They try to dabble in everything. They should leave DHSC and Manx Care to get on with things. Manx Care has been given a mandate and will do their best to fulfil it.
  4. But I suppose the aims of the island don't always align with those of UK. We seem to have lost Protocol 3 without a fight and are not being considered separately in trade deals. Jersey seems to be more pro-active than the Isle of Man.
  5. 'The Isle of Man has the potential to establish itself as a significant player in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), although there are several factors to consider in achieving this. Investment in Infrastructure: The Isle of Man would need to invest in infrastructure to support AI development, including high-speed internet connectivity, research facilities, and educational programs focused on AI. Collaboration and Partnerships: Collaboration with universities, research institutions, and businesses both locally and globally could accelerate AI research and development. Building partnerships with leading AI companies or academic institutions could provide access to expertise and resources. Regulatory Environment: Establishing clear regulations and guidelines for AI development and deployment is crucial for fostering innovation while ensuring ethical and responsible use of AI technologies. The Isle of Man would need to create a supportive regulatory environment that encourages innovation while protecting privacy and security. Talent Development: Investing in education and training programs to develop a skilled workforce in AI-related fields is essential. This includes not only technical skills but also expertise in areas such as ethics, law, and policy related to AI. Focus on Niche Areas: Identifying niche areas or specialized applications of AI where the Isle of Man can excel could help it carve out a unique position in the global AI landscape. This could involve focusing on specific industries or applications where the Isle of Man has existing expertise or competitive advantages. Promotion and Marketing: Promoting the Isle of Man as a hub for AI innovation through marketing efforts, participation in conferences and events, and networking with industry stakeholders can help raise awareness and attract talent and investment. Overall, while becoming a leader in AI would require concerted effort and investment, the Isle of Man's size and flexibility could also offer advantages in terms of agility and adaptability to emerging trends in the AI landscape.'

  8. They don't even do that. I haven't heard much about the Equality Bill since it was passed in 2017.
  9. There is something to be said for having a company come from England where they implement their Equality Bill. We've had one here since 2017 but lots of places still discriminate against people with disabilities. https://www.manxradio.com/news/isle-of-man-news/hopes-that-new-changing-places-toilet-will-put-pressure-on-government/

  12. Yes And 25% affordable unless they have Section 13 Agreement not to do it. 'Housing Policy 5: In granting planning permission on land zoned for residential development or in predominantly residential areas the Department will normally require that 25% of provision should be made up of affordable housing. This policy will apply to developments of 8 dwellings or more.'

  14. I challenge you to walk from 'Westmorland Village' to Lord Street in 7 minutes.
  15. M and Co building is at the end of Market Street near St Thomas' school and church. This is what the Master Plan suggested 10 years ago. 'Potential re-clad and re-organisation of retail units beneath Chester Street Car Park Create larger retail opportunities and positive shop frontage to Market Street and more efficient & increased floor space. This will help extend the retail area into Market Street area to create larger units as required'
  16. Since 2014 there has been plans for this area of Douglas but they are only aspirational. https://www.gov.im/media/1357109/central-douglas-masterplan-2014.pdf

  18. It's a pity this debate has been delayed yet again. It could have been decided before the next bishop is appointed emphasising that it is not personal just a move towards having a secular society.
  19. Not necessarily. It could occur when a person has died and next month's pension payment is already in the pipeline. That would be counted as an overpayment needing to be recovered.
  20. They could raise income tax thresholds and take low earners out of 10% bracket for a start.
  21. Council of Ministers' Report https://www.tynwald.org.im/spfile?file=/business/opqp/sittings/20212026/2024-GD-0026.pdf 'Once poverty measures are established then a streamlined cross government annual report on the relevant measures and the impact of Government actions may be co-ordinated. Without a measurement for poverty it will be challenging for the Council of Ministers to measure the impact of Government actions which aim to reduce poverty. Many Government actions will have an impact on poverty, although there is currently no mechanism for measuring the effectiveness of any of these actions relevant to poverty.' Yes Ministers.
  22. They're not ready for artificial intelligence either. https://www.gov.je/government/freedomofinformation/pages/foi.aspx?ReportID=6335 But at least Jersey are making plans. https://www.pwc.com/jg/en/topics/digitally-upskilling-the-channel-islands.html
