There's quite a difference between teaching assistants, who work alongside teachers helping support pupils, and cover supervisors who supervise classes in the absence of the teacher. Many of the former, who can be invaluable for children who have additional needs or are less-able academically, have been got rid of as a cost saving, both here and in the UK. Cover supervisors are employed in the IoM and in the UK, because they're cheaper than supply teachers or there are no supply teachers available. Our children do deserve better, but unless we spend more on education nothing will change.

A combination of teacher shortages, supply teacher shortages and financial constraints have led to the situation being as Meoir Shee has explained. If a teacher is not available because of exam administration, jury service(!), illness, duties as a teacher governor, being away on interview, attending child protection meetings, compulsory training, sickness or whatever, it is more than likely that a cover supervisor will be in charge.

That's the unacceptable face of capitalism, which is why we need Labour politicians to moderate the greed.
