Having lived in Sarf London I found Harry Brown vewry depressing. I lot of old folk are frightened of groups of teenagers and going out at night is out of the question.

It is a very good film and well worth watching because you can get right into the story because of the relevence to British city experience

 

Liked David Bradley, he was in Our Friends in the North. Another execellent British drama

Cop out, The start had me in stiches and while the rest of the film is a bit patchy for laughs its the funniest film i've seen for ages

Wall Street 2 - Not as good as the original obviously and a bit "all over the place" in terms of storyline but decent enough to spend time watching it. 6.5/10

 

The Social Network - Surprisingly good actually. I don't use FaceSpace or any of those social networks but the story was good enough to hold it's own. 7/10

 

Knight and Day - Cruise and Cameron. Was itching to hate it, but as an action "dodge the bullets" Hollywood fodder movie it was ok. 6/10

 

Iron Man 2 - Way to go to ruin a solid first movie - follow up with a turkey. 3/10

Machete, and Predators.

 

Loved both of them. Been looking forward to seeing Machete for ages (in fact before it was even announced as a film) and it didn't disappoint. Loads of OTT action.

 

Predators was great too although I'd have to say my only gripe if I had to was whilst the main dude in it had a hardman/hero voice and lines, he didn't look a suitable Arnie followup. Who could, but I was slightly disappointed that it didn't seem to have people who'd been chronically abusing steroids to become supersized. Daft maybe but it could have done with one or two 'larger than life' characters I thought since the rest of it made an effort to follow the tone of the original.

For the 5th time, tried 'Me and that Mr Wells' film.

 

Still shite, can never get past the first 15 mins.

 

It's just like trying to sit through a school play with all the teenagers trying to sound American. Thrown it out now, just what was the fuss about?

Watched a load of comedy dvds this past week

 

Dara O'Briain - This is the show. Very funny but I'd seen him do this show when he was in the Villa. His previous DVDs are better. Falling into the trap of doing routines about his kids. 8/10

John Bishop - Elvis has left the building. Didn't think I'd like this but it was very good. He has an annoying habit of repeating himself but the material makes up for it. 8/10

Kevin Bridges - Live in Glasgow. Funny stuff but a lot of it very specific to Glasgow. 7/10

Stewart Francis - Tour de Francis. Very funny on MTW but a whole DVD of his clever one-liners is a bit too much. I had to watch it in a couple of sittings. 5/10

Milton Jones - Live Universe Tour. Again funny on MTW but the material doesn't really stretch to a whole DVD. 4/10

Rhod Gilbert - and the Cat... Rants and raves and shouts his way through all his material. Tiring for the viewer and tbh I didn't watch it to the end as he was giving me a headache. 3/10

Billy Connolly - Live in London 2010. Oh dear. It's like seeing your favourite band on a downward spiral but still continue to release CDs in the hope of reliving the early days. Watch his early stuff. 2/10

Frankie Boyle - If I could reach through your TV.... If you like comedians who's material consists primarily of paedophilia, gay sex and the word cunt then he's your man. Seriously unfunny. 1/10

Been watching 'The Pacific' on DVD (Love Film keep sending me them). Found it pretty good and doesn't show the American soldiers in a good light all the time (stealing gold teeth out of dead Japanese, having breakdowns during the fighting, etc). Pretty good. However just like Band of Brothers, other than the main one or two characters I can never work out who is who, as they are always covered in grime and blood.

I occasionally find him funny, he's certainly well over the line in a lot of regards but I think some of his material is misrepresented, the furore around his disabled routines for example kind of misses the point IMO.

 

Daily Mail gets righteous and misses the point, for a change

He's not a clever comedian, his delivery is very poor and his material is just the same repeated boring stuff. Substitute disabled people and gays for niggers and wops and hey presto you have Jim Davidson. Then again some people like that. Horses for courses.

But that's running with the assumption that he's attacking disabled people, and I don't believe that he is, whereas the targets of Davidson's humour were often 'gays and niggers'.

 

I mostly agree with you that Boyle isn't a great comedian (I found it a genuine effort to get to the end of his first DVD, and had no interest in buying his second), therefore at least the material in Tramadol Nights is new to me, and in 23 minute chunks I can manage him.

 

The sketches are mostly awful and really showcase what a dreadful actor he is, but some of them have clever ideas and in some cases clever idea and execution, plus some of the supporting cast can at least act.

 

The BBC did a pretty good job of bringing out the best of him on Mock The Week, left to his own devices he isn't nearly as funny, but I still find there's enough there to merit the 23 minutes it takes to watch/endure an episode of Tramadol Nights per week.

Exact problem I had first time around when watching it on sky, I had no idea who was who apart from the two main fellas, which does actually ruin it quite a bit, hard to feel anything for them when they die when you don't know who it is!

 

 

RE: Frankie Boyle - 50/50 to me, always has been, but I gotta admit think I might be leaning more in favour of not liking his stuff now a days. I liked bits of tramadol nights, and actually thought some of sketches were actually pretty damn good (knight rider was a stand out), but there were a few turkeys in the sketches and the jokes and I was even more disappointed with his DVD which was all the same material as Tramadol nights......I agree the MTW producers and editors were the real talent behind Boyle........
